Why Jared Letos Joker Justice League Look Is Like Joaquin Phoenixs

Jared Leto’s Joker has a new look in Zack Snyder’s Justice League and it bears quite the resemblance to Joaquin Phoenix’s iteration of the character. The DCEU’s Clown Prince of Crime is returning to screens in Snyder’s version of the 2017 movie, and the director himself got fans’ attention when he shared a blurred shot of Leto’s Joker in costume from the Justice League Snyder Cut. Though you can barely make out any kind of features from the image, it’s clear enough to tell that Leto won’t be bringing back the polarizing look he sported when fans last saw him.

Leto, of course, played The Joker in 2016’s Suicide Squad. A movie reviled by critics, one of the reasons for that poor reputation was its portrayal of the classic DC character. While the actor admittedly didn’t have a lot to work with, some fans had already made their mind up about him ahead of the film’s release because the tattoo-sporting menace looked so different to his comic book counterpart. That reception seemed to speak volumes to Warner Bros. because all projects featuring the character were seemingly cancelled afterwards. And, with that, fans were left wondering what could have been if Leto had been allowed to play a more traditional Joker.

The Joker shown in the Justice League image, however, looks noticeably different. Because it’s blurred it is hard to tell if this version of the character is more traditional-looking but, with long hair and what looks to be a completely different make-up design, it’s definitely a far cry from the modernized iteration he played in Suicide Squad. Indeed, the longer hair, gaunt-looking facial features, and even the pose all evoke memories of Joaquin Phoenix’s version of the character. The proper design may not be too similar, but this does suggest that he’ll end up looking more like the character seen in 2019’s Joker than the one from Suicide Squad. It’s a little confusing, but the reason for this new look is almost certainly down to the fact that he’s expected to appear in Justice League’s Knightmare sequence.

Snyder previously confirmed that there would be more of the hellish landscape shown in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice should the Snyder Cut ever see the light of day. With that in mind, that would explain Leto’s new Joker look. As evidenced by the Gotham By Gaslight-inspired Batman and the evil Superman, a lot changes between the present and that future, so it’s highly likely that The Joker would sport a completely different (and probably more terrifying) appearance.

On the other hand, however, you do have to wonder if this move was deliberate. Phoenix delivered an award-worthy performance as the character in Joker – one that actually did end up earning him an Academy Award, BAFTA, and Golden Globe Award (among others) – and, thanks in no small part to some incredible material, he was easily able to eclipse Leto’s performance in the role. Perhaps by having Leto’s Joker sport a look in Zack Snyder’s Justice League more like Phoenix’s – which was original in its own right but still recognizably in-line with the character – Snyder is hoping that this new version of the DCEU Joker will be seen in a more positive light, wiping the slate clean and perhaps giving Leto a chance to prove himself as a more familiar version of the character.
