Why Jazwares Will Never Release Pokémon’s Elekid in Toy Form

The brand manager of Jazwares, which produces Pokémon products, says Elekid’s clever yet dangerous design means it will never become a toy.

Out of the many hundreds of Pokémon out there, Elekid is the sole Pocket Monster that is highly unlikely to be made into a toy by Jazwares, one of the companies that holds the license to manufacture Pokémon merchandise.

Aaron Margolin, Jazwares’ brand manager, pointed out on Twitter that Elekid was designed with horns that look like AC plugs, making a toy of the Electric-type Pokémon too dangerous for a child who might try plugging it into an outlet.

Margolin called Elekid “hands-down the best Baby Pokémon from a design perspective” and lamented the fact that the creature’s unique appearance was “awesome yet potentially deadly” as a toy. He added that while he “should never say never,” he had been planning Pokémon toy lineups for three years and Elekid was still off the table.

While figures of Elekid have been produced over the years, Jazwares — which has released everything from Pikachu plush toys to “My Partner Eevee,” a figure with a built-in microphone — is not responsible for any of them. Margolin responded to a Twitter commenter who shared an image of one of these alternate figurines — an Elekid cake topper with its arm raised close to the horns — and called the pose a “smart solve” for the outlet problem but still too risky.

Another commenter suggested that the space between Elekid’s horns could be filled with a clear acrylic material, but Margolin said that Jazware’s Pokémon figures were simply too small for such a detail.

Elekid debuted in the Pokémon Gold and Pokémon Silver Game Boy games, which were released in Japan in 1999 and received international localizations one year later. The yellow-and-black monster is one of eight pre-evolutions of existing Pokémon, also known as Baby Pokémon, introduced in the two games. Elekid’s evolved form is Electabuzz, one of the original 151 Pokémon.
