No other show has an ensemble that can compete with Game of Thrones. The fantasy series followed so many characters in so many locations that fans could be excused for getting overly confused at various times. And with so many characters, it’s hard to say if there was really one main character.

When determining who the show’s most important character is, one clear choice that jumps out is Jon Snow. He was someone that has been front-and-center since the very beginning of the series after all. Game of Thrones liked to play around with the idea of heroes and villains with some despicable people showing more layers than expected and some good people suddenly doing something terrible.

However, Jon Snow has stuck to the basic journey of a hero since the beginning. He came from meager and troubled beginnings, faced countless obstacles but gradually grew into the hero who inspired many.

With the stunning reveal of his true parentage, Jon Snow is shown to be a son of the Targaryens and Starks, joining fire and ice together. It not only makes him the true heir to the Iron Throne, but also the figure at the story’s center.

The only other character whose storyline has been as central from the beginning of the series is Daenerys Targaryen. She was introduced early as someone who fans could cheer for on her journey to reclaim her family’s throne which was taken from them.

Daenerys’ journey from a slave girl to a leader to a savior, and finally, to villain was very much at the heart of the show. While some fans might not have been happy with the final twist, seeing what she became because of her desire for the throne feels like the main message of the story.

2 Jon Snow: The Ending

It’s no secret that the ending to Game of Thrones left many fans unfulfilled. While some felt the decisions that were made were ridiculous, it is possible that they did make sense but were perhaps too rushed. In any case, the fact that Jon Snow is the character who ends the entire series is significant.

After killing Daenerys, Jon is allowed to go back to Castle Black where he leads the Wildlings Beyond the Wall. This feels like a way of showing despite who his parents really are and despite his claim to the throne, Jon was raised by Ned Stark and belongs in the North. How effective that message comes across remains up for debate.
