Why Marvels SpiderMan 2 Shouldnt Be Insomniacs First CoOp Game

While many Spider-Man fans were hoping to get the opportunity to team up with a friend in Insomniac’s Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, a lesser-known superhero duo might be more well-suited for a potential first co-op outing for Insomniac. After the impressive teaser trailer for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 showed Peter Parker and Miles Morales teaming up to take down villains in the streets of New York, many gamers were hoping that they might be able to play with a friend in two-player co-op, with each player taking on a different Spider-Man. Insomniac unfortunately confirmed that Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 would be a single-player experience, but it didn’t stop many players from dreaming about the perfect Marvel-themed, co-op story game. If Insomniac were to eventually try its hand at a co-op experience, the Marvel duo Cloak and Dagger could make for a much more interesting team up experience than two Spider-Men.

Cloak and Dagger’s first appearance was fittingly in Peter Parker, the Spectacular Spider-Man #64 in March 1982. While the duo has teamed up with many superhero groups, including the X-Men, Secret Avengers, and the Runaways, their relationship with Spider-Man would make them a perfect choice to cameo in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. Cloak, whose name is Tyrone Johnson, first met Tandy Bowen (who later becomes Dagger) when the two were runaway teenagers trying to survive on the cold streets of New York. Eventually, Tandy accepts an opportunity to be taken in by some strange men and given shelter. Feeling uneasy about the situation and worrying for Tandy’s safety, Ty accompanies her. The men are revealed to be working for a chemist named Simon Marshall, who has been testing a new form of heroin on teens. The two manage to survive the experiments, and end up gaining their powers. After escaping, they begin calling themselves Cloak and Dagger, and use their powers to help those in need.

Unlike Peter Parker and Miles Morales, Cloak and Dagger possess wildly different powers that were created to complement each other, and can help them play different roles in a battle. Dagger’s powers are primarily offensive, while Cloak’s are more defensive, which could provide a unique cooperative experience to both players playing a game with the two characters, and encourage different playstyles. In addition, Cloak and Dagger are romantic partners in most of their comic runs. The popularity of recent Game of the Year winner It Takes Two has shown that a lot of gaming couples are wanting more games that allow them to explore romance together while playing. This aspect of Cloak and Dagger could enhance the storytelling experience, making the co-op play more meaningful.

Cloak & Dagger’s Powers Make For A Perfect Co-Op Game

Cloak and Dagger’s respective powers could work perfectly in tandem for such a game’s combat. Dagger could function primarily as damage, while Cloak could provide backup with defensive utility to help Dagger take down enemies. Dagger’s ability allows her to throw daggers made of light energy that drain enemies of their lifeforce, and Tandy’s experience as a ballet dancer made her into a strong and agile fighter.

Cloak’s powers, on the other hand, give him access to the Darkforce Dimension. He can use this to teleport himself and allies, as well as cloaking them in its darkness. These abilities could be used not only in combat but could also make for interesting and exciting ways to complete puzzles. Cloak and Dagger also need each other’s powers to sustain themselves. Cloak has an insatiable hunger to absorb light, which Dagger can feed using her light Daggers. Meanwhile, Dagger can become overcharged if she does not expend enough light. Feeding Cloak’s hunger helps prevent her from becoming overcharged.

Cloak and Dagger’s need for each other in more ways than one could make for an excellent co-op only experience, like It Takes Two. While Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 holds a lot of promise, bringing in two versions of Spider-Man and many new villains. However, Cloak and Dagger would make for a better cooperative experience with potentially more nuance, and could be the perfect choice of heroes for Insomniac to focus on if it ever tried its hand at a co-op gaming experience.
