Why MCUs SpiderMan Works Even Without An Origin Story

With the as-yet-untitled Spider-Man: Homecoming 3 sharing set photos and teasing at potential plot points, the question of Spider-Man’s origin story within the MCU has once again arisen. As he was first introduced in Captain America: Civil War, Spider-Man’s first encounter with the Marvel films did not include the traditional backstory model that has been a part of the films for a majority of the franchise properties. In Spider-Man: Homecoming, the film proceeded directly from the existing character and relationships set up by Civil War. As a consequence, no film in the MCU has established the origins of Spider-Man’s powers, or touched on the defining tragedy of his uncle’s death that has served as a jumping-off point in other Spider-Man films.

With hints that Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield both may have cameo appearances in this upcoming picture, there may be some pressure to reveal Holland’s Spider-Man origin story and true reasons for adopting the Spider-Man mantle. But does this ground need to be covered again? In both the original Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home, audiences have seen an earnest and well-intentioned Spider-Man do the right thing even when it’s hard. Shaped by challenges and loss, as well as positive role-models, Tom Holland’s Spider-Man has clearly learned a sense of deep responsibility even before he was first revealed in Civil War.

The Spider-Man from the homecoming series has not wanted for positive and supportive figures in his life, in the form of his aunt, his friends, fellow heroes like Iron Man, and even Happy Hogan as an Uncle Ben-like figure in Far From Home. Although it may not be the way that other films have chosen to show the hero, by first depicting Spider-Man sometime after he had already made his web-slinging debut, the audience was treated to a different Spider-Man story that did not feel the need to start Peter Parker at the very beginning of his Hero’s Journey. With successful films staring Maguire and Garfield already covering the loss of Peter’s uncle, it would be hard to frame the story in a new way, and the writers have wisely avoided reinventing the wheel.

It’s clear that the MCU hasn’t avoided talking about Uncle Ben entirely. Scattered through Peter’s things are hints that his uncle is gone but not forgotten, like a monogrammed suitcase with the initials BFP: Benjamin Franklin Parker. Having Iron Man solve the problem of wanting for an on-screen guiding figure was a bold way to tie the Spider-Man films into the existing MCU franchise, and so audiences have been treated to a Peter Parker who grows in ways that refine his existing character, based on active decisions rather than tragic loss.

Resilience in the face of adversity, and getting up no matter how often he falls down, are defining characteristics of the Spider-Man character. The MCU has not lost out on a Spider-Man with personal responsibility, the drive to do the right thing, or that immense resiliency. If audiences wish to watch the origin story of Spider-Man, they are welcome to re-watch either of the original imaginings of the Spider-Man franchise. Spider-Man: Homecoming 3 will continue to develop Spider-Man as a character that knows where he came from, and doesn’t need to revisit it on screen for it to be important.
