Why Modern Comedy Movies Are Better Off On Netflix Than In Cinemas

The Lovebirds is doing well on Netflix, and in the age of high ticket prices and Coronavirus concerns, more comedies would be better off streaming. A Paramount Pictures production, The Lovebirds stars Insecure’s Issa Rae and The Big Sick’s Kumail Nanjiani as a couple who ends up having to solve a murder after they accidentally become involved in one through no fault of their own. Made on a $16 million budget, The Lovebirds is certainly far from an indie film, but definitely cost a lot less than many other releases from Paramount.

Prior to the Coronavirus pandemic that has gripped the U.S. – and much of the rest of the world – since March, The Lovebirds was planned to receive a theatrical release on April 3, which was of course canceled when the virus hit. The Lovebirds became one of several films to ultimately skip theaters and head to streaming as a result, whether on Netflix, Amazon Prime, or another competing service.

The Lovebirds has received mostly positive reviews from critics, and a warm reception from Netflix subscribers, sitting near the top of the service’s charts since its May 22 release. While film purists will surely balk at the idea that any genre of film wouldn’t be better enjoyed in the theater, The Lovebirds’ success – along with other factors – suggest that laughs might be better suited to home viewing.

Why Comedy Movies Are Better Off On Netflix Than In Cinemas

In the last several decades, the average price for a movie ticket has only continued to climb, as has the price of concessions at the theater. With travel costs also in play for those who don’t live nearby, going to the movies is not a financial decision many Americans can make lightly. They might be willing to part with the cash in order to take in the latest Marvel or DC superhero blockbuster, or a big budget sequel like Jurassic World 3 or Fast and the Furious 9, but a comedy, especially one that doesn’t employ lots of special effects, is generally much less of a theatrical draw for most. There’s a reason comedies – at least not ones related to an established franchise, or that mix heavily with another more “exciting” genre – rarely top the weekly box office charts, or year end standings.

While standard comedy movies may not cost as much to make as say, a Pirates of the Caribbean sequel, the marketing and distribution costs for wide studio releases are never anything to sneeze at. By instead selling their comedies to Netflix, or another streamer, from now on, studios would very much be mitigating any financial risk on their end. At the same time, viewers tend to have somewhat lower standards for movies they can watch at home at no extra cost beyond the Netflix subscription they already pay for, and are less likely to react badly to a movie than if they paid to see a stinker at a multiplex. Really, it makes all the sense in the world for more and more comedies to go the online distribution route.

The Lovebirds isn’t the only comedy to already end up sold off to streaming, as Dave Bautista’s My Spy is headed to Amazon Prime, and Tiffany Haddish prank comedy Bad Trip is headed to Netflix. As movies continue to be delayed due to Coronavirus, this trend will likely continue, as studios clearly realize that it makes no sense to sit on movies for an extended period if they’re not expected to be huge theatrical earners. While it wouldn’t be wise to have comedies uniformly skip the big screen, especially the ones with bankable A-listers in the leads, it’s definitely a prospect more studios should consider going forward.
