Why Nebula Has Conflicting Feelings On Thanos’ Death In Endgame

The death of Thanos in Avengers: Endgame has given Nebula conflicting feelings. As the adopted daughter of the Mad Titan, Karen Gillan’s character was originally introduced as his loyal soldier. But, as she developed a more sisterly bond with Gamora, Nebula realized that she can leave the abusive relationship that she had with Thanos. Since then, she’d worked with the Avengers against Thanos.

On the heels of Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, Nebula developed a relationship with her fellow surviving heroes from the decimation. It started with having to spend time with Iron Man in Benatar for around three weeks before they were saved by Captain Marvel. Once they reached Earth, she became instrumental in tracking down where Thanos retreated after the snap. This led to the villain’s death as Thor lost his patience after realizing that the Infinity Stones no longer existed. In the five years that followed, she stayed with Rocket, and together, they kept contact with other heroes including Black Widow who was manning Avengers HQ. Despite seemingly having moved on from the Mad Titan’s manipulations, Gillan reveals that her character remains conflicted about his death.

In a recent interview with Collider for her new film, Gunpowder Milkshake, the actress opened up about Nebula’s state of mind following Thanos’ death. While the general assumption would be that she’s happy that her abuser is finally gone, the actress reveals that it’s not as simple as that.

“I think we left Nebula in a really interesting place where she experienced the death of her father, but also of her abuser essentially, the person that made her life a living hell. And so those feelings are really conflicting. I think for her, she’s feeling a sense of relief, the catharsis of it all, but she’s also probably feeling a sense of loss to a father figured because these relationships can be really, really complicated where even though they’re treating you so badly, you can still be desperate for approval and love from that type of figure in your life. And so for her, I think it’s both.”

Nebula’s feelings on the death of Thanos are understandable, especially with the way Gillan broke it down in her quote. Despite his abusive nature, the Mad Titan was the only parent figure that the character has had for a long time. So while their relationship is dysfunctional, it’s still something that Nebula held onto, perhaps she even had hopes that somehow the Mad Titan will change. Her unrelenting loyalty to him before realizing that he’s a lost cause backs up this idea. But, this could also be due to how Marvel Studios resolved their issue. Much of Nebula’s arc in the MCU was tied to Thanos, and yet, Endgame didn’t even give her a one-on-one moment with him just so she could properly confront him for all the years of abuse she inflicted on her.

It curious how Nebula’s conflicting feelings about Thanos will affect her future arcs in the MCU — if at all. In Avengers: Endgame, Iron Man briefly became a father figure for her as they were trapped floating in space. Now that he’s gone too, she’s left with no parental relationships. But, at least she has her family with the Guardians of the Galaxy. Nebula also still has a sister in Gamora, they just need to find her.
