Why Psych Eventually Made A Musical Episode (After So Many Years)

After years of slow development, Psych aired a musical special that has remained popular with fans of the USA series. As the title implies, Psych: The Musical featured a number of original songs from the show’s main cast.

Typically, seasons of Psych would consist of 16 episodes, but season 7’s episode count was cut down to 14 because two of those slots were reserved for a long-awaited, two-hour musical special. Released during the hiatus between seasons 7 and 8, Psych: The Musical was about Shawn Spencer (James Roday Rodriguez) and Burton “Gus” Guster (Dulé Hill) getting involved with a murder case where the prime suspect was Z (Anthony Rapp), a playwright and escaped mental patient. The special was packed with songs performed by key characters on the show, including Shawn Spencer, Gus, Juliet O’Hara (Maggie Lawson), Carlton Lassiter (Timothy Omundson), Chief Vick (Kristin Nelson), and Woody the Coroner (Kurt Fuller). Fan-favorite recurring characters such as Mary (Jimmi Simpson) and Mr. Yang (Ally Sheedy) were brought back for musical numbers as well.

Psych: The Musical was something that the cast and crew had promised fans years before it actually aired in December 2013. According to Rodriguez, Psych creator Steve Franks had been pitching a musical episode ever since season 2 in 2007, but it took a while for it to go anywhere. Plans for the episode was also discussed publicly in 2010, but it was another three years before it actually happened. Rodriguez said that in Psych’s early seasons, there was an issue of “execution”, as they had to convince USA that a musical would be a good idea for the show [via THR].

Later on, as Psych started making tribute episodes, like season 4’s Alfred Hitchcock-inspired “Mr. Yin Presents”, Franks and Rodriguez recognized how flexible USA was being with them in regards to what they were allowing. That’s when they realized that it was possible for them to make their “dream” episodes. Rodriguez wanted a Psych Twin Peaks episode – which did ultimately happen in season 5 – and Franks’ was a Psych musical. The musical has been described as Franks’ “baby”, and something that he really wanted to do for years. They decided to officially announce it at SDCC 2012 so that there “would be no turning back” with the network, and through social media, they were able to increase enthusiasm for it and strengthen the fanbase’s interest in the concept.

Unfortunately, busy schedules, work on other episodes, and the amount of time it would take to make the two-hour special kept Franks from making fast progress on it and that of course resulted in delays. They had hoped to release it during season 6, but it had to be pushed back to season 7. Though Psych: The Musical took place chronologically during the first half of season 7 (before Juliet discovered Shawn’s secret), viewers weren’t able to see it until after the season was over because of scheduling issues with USA.
