Why Steve Carell Left The Office

Here’s why Steve Carell decided to leave The Office after seven seasons. The Office is based on the classic BBC sitcom of the same name, which was co-created by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant (Fighting With My Family). The show took the form of a mockumentary that revolved around the employees of a paper company, led by boss David Brent (Gervais). Brent thinks of himself as a cool, hilarious boss but his attempts at humor often fell horribly flat. The series came to an end after two seasons and a Christmas special, though Gervais would return to the character for the 2016 film David Brent: Life On The Road.

The American take on The Office arrived in 2005 and while it got off to a shaky start, it evolved into one of the best sitcoms of it era. Steve Carell played boss Michael Scott and the show also provided breakthrough roles for John Krasinski (A Quiet Place) and Jenna Fischer. The series would run for nine seasons and over 200 episodes, coming to an end in 2013. The series has never really gone away, however, thanks to its enduring popularity on Netflix.

A major part of The Office’s popularity was down to Steve Carell’s performance as the hapless Michael. While he may have meant well, he was prone to making constant inappropriate gags towards his employees and had a hard time separating business from his personal life. While Carell had been a known comic performer prior to The Office thanks to movies like Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, it was The Office that made him a star. Some actors also have a hard time making the transition from TV to movies, but Carell’s big-screen career actually evolved along his time on The Office.

During the first season of The Office Steve Carell also starred in The 40-Year-Old Virgin, which was a big hit. While he was working on the show he made movies like Little Miss Sunshine, Date Night and Despicable Me. Carell’s original contract for The Office locked him in for seven seasons, so when season 7 loomed, he made the announcement he was leaving to focus on his film career. This certainly made sense, considering balancing a movie career with the demands of a network sitcom each year would be particularly demanding. Carell’s exit came in season 7 finale “Goodbye, Michael,” which was met with critical acclaim and is considered one of the best episodes of The Office.

Steve Carell’s film career has gone from strength to strength ever since, including an Academy Award nod of his performance in Foxcatcher and great reviews for his work in The Big Short and Battle Of The Sexes. He’s somewhat drifted away from comedic roles too and while it hasn’t all been smooth sailing – like the failure of 2018’s Welcome to Marwen – he’s forged an impressive career away from The Office. While Carell still has a lot of love for the show, he’s ruled out any kind of return for a reboot, feeling it would only serve to underwhelm fans as if it couldn’t recapture the magic of the show’s original run.
