Why Supernaturals Crowley Left the Show on Bad Terms

Crowley was always a fan favorite character on Supernatural, but actor Mark A. Sheppard was no fan of how he ultimately departed the series. Any long-running TV show ends up creating recurring characters that gain popularity with audiences. This is especially true for Supernatural, as the series’ fanbase is one of the most loyal and devoted in the history of pop culture. Anyone who makes their mark on Supernatural is likely to be “made” in the eyes of fans for the rest of their career, much less their time on the show.

However, while Supernatural is well-known for having dead characters return later on for another hurrah, that hasn’t been the case for Mark A. Sheppard’s Crowley, who was first introduced way back in season 5. Crowley began his tenure as an unequivocal villain, but as the series went on, he found his interests aligning with Sam and Dean Winchester more and more often, to the point where he seemed to develop an unconventional friendship with the brothers. Crowley’s demonic nature meant he could never be fully trusted, but he still bailed the Winchesters out of several jams.

In Supernatural’s season 12 finale, Crowley met his demise, sacrificing his own life to try and trap Lucifer inside the dimension that would come to be known as Apocalypse World. Supernatural is now currently in its fifteenth and final season, and as far as anyone knows, neither Crowley or Mark A. Sheppard will return before Sam and Dean ride off into the sunset.

Why Mark A. Sheppard Exited Supernatural

Not long after Crowley exited Supernatural, there was a pretty provocative instance on Twitter where executive producer Jim Michaels hinted that both Crowley and Mark A. Sheppard might not be done with the series for good. Sheppard responded by accusing Michaels of intentionally misleading fans, and stated bluntly that there were no plans for him to come back at any juncture. Fans were left baffled, and wondering why there seemed to be bad blood between Supernatural’s producers and one of their best supporting players.

While the circumstances surrounding Sheppard’s exit still aren’t 100% clear, the actor did reveal during a convention panel in 2018 how he felt about Crowley’s ending. Sheppard says that over his last couple of seasons, the writers and producers had clearly decided to move in a different direction, and one that didn’t necessarily include Crowley. He feels like they were looking for a way to write him out for the story for about two years, even though they weren’t straight up with him about that desire. He also thought Crowley’s death was poorly done, and that Crowley went from “being the smartest character on the show to being the dumbest character on the show in two seasons,” and thinks the writers ran out of ideas for him.

Interestingly, Sheppard revealed during a different 2018 convention appearance that he wasn’t the person who made the call to kill Crowley off, and that he still didn’t necessarily want to leave Supernatural. Sadly, it looks like the venerable drama will end without a reunion between Crowley and the Winchester boys.
