Why the CAR SMG is a Big Deal for Apex Legends

As Season 11 of Apex Legends draws closer, fans of the battle royale were interested to see what new character would be added to the roster of Legends and what, if any, new weapon they would be bringing to the table. This week Respawn announced that Ash, a minor antagonist from Titanfall 2 and the character running the Apex Arenas, would be joining the fight along with a new weapon: the CAR SMG. Longtime fans of the Titanfall series will recognize the CAR from and are likely excited about its introduction.

Apex Legends is inherently tied to Titanfall, as the two take place in the same universe and share many characters. Ash’s inclusion is cool enough, but many fans are just as excited to try out the CAR SMG now that it’s back in the franchise. The SMG was one of the best weapons in Titanfall 2’s multiplayer, and many fans were disappointed it wasn’t included in Apex at launch.

The CAR SMG’s Excellent Stats

Why the CAR SMG is a Big Deal for Apex Legends

The CAR was extremely popular in Titanfall 2 based on its versatility. Although it’s an SMG and not a rifle, it had impeccable range and accuracy when firing single shots at distant targets. Despite dealing slightly less damage than the R101 and R201 Carbines, the CAR was frequently preferred due to its stats. The SMG’s surprisingly long range made it deadly for those engaging in ranged combat, but its attributes as an SMG made it even deadlier up close.

Easily picking off Pilots within close range, the CAR SMG was one of the go-to picks for Titanfall 2 players, so its inclusion in Apex Legends is welcome in many Titanfall fans’ eyes. Hopefully, the SMG will capture the same fast-paced gunplay that fans enjoyed when originally using it in Titanfall. However there will likely be some changes made when it arrives in Apex to better balance the game.

What the CAR Might Be Like in Apex Legends

Because it’s an SMG, there are likely some nerfs incoming for the CAR from its current state in Titanfall. While its single-fire accuracy should stay relatively the same, it seems more likely that its long-range damage will be greatly reduced to make sure the R301 Carbine doesn’t get outclassed. The tricky line for Respawn to walk is making the CAR useful without making other weapons irrelevant in Apex Legends. It runs the risk of outclassing or being outclassed by guns such as the Volt, the R99, the R301 Carbine, and the RE45.

Other SMGs and automatic light weapons have already filled the void left by the CAR, so its addition might require some major tweaking. It has the potential to be one of Apex’s best weapons, but it also runs the risk of being a master of none when first introduced. Recent entries to Apex Legends’ arsenal have had weapon gimmicks, such as the Rampage’s revved-up state and the Bocek bow’s retrievable ammo, so it’s yet to be seen if the CAR will feature anything of the sort. Hopefully, it will remain largely untouched from what Titanfall fans remember in past Respawn games. Either way, excitement is high for the weapon as, if it’s balanced well and retains the feel of the original, it could be the best new weapon coming to the game.
