Why The MCUs New Statue Of Liberty Is Gold

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Spider-Man: No Way Home.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Statue of Liberty is now gold, but why? After a European escapade in Spider-Man: Far From Home, Peter Parker’s (Tom Holland) latest adventure takes place in New York in Spider-Man: No Way Home. To highlight his return home, the threequel’s final act battle is set in Liberty Island, which shows the Statue of Liberty gold in color as compared to its green patina in real life.

Marvel Studios, like Marvel Comics, tends to use real-world locations in its films in an effort to ground the MCU’s stories. There are fictional places such as Sokovia from Avengers: Age of Ultron, Wakanda in Black Panther, and Madripoor in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and other fictional MCU locations like Knowhere, Vormir, and Titan, but Earth-bound battles are typically set in real-life cities. However, no metropolis has been as explicitly featured in the franchise as New York City. The Big Apple was where the Avengers first assembled; it’s also where several heroes are originally from, including Queens native, Spider-Man.

Given this, it’s fitting that Spider-Man: No Way Home’s story takes place in New York, especially after spending the last Spider-Man movie overseas. The latest Jon Watts-directed movie ended with an epic battle between Holland, Tobey Maguire, and Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Men and various villains. The Statue of Liberty, which was being reconstructed to carry Captain America’s shield, functioned as the fight’s backdrop, revealing that the figure is now gold in color and not green. Marvel Studios sometimes gets liberal in terms of fictionalizing certain real-world places, and New York is no exception with the Stark-turned-Avengers Tower replacing the MetLife Building in Midtown. In that instance, however, there’s a clear narrative motivation for the change, but Spider-Man: No Way Home didn’t reveal any kind of explanation for its Statue of Liberty alteration.

Even if Marvel Studios was already planning on giving the Statue of Liberty a face-lift by replacing her torch with Captain America’s shield, it still doesn’t explain why they needed to also change its color, unless it’s an indication of a narrative to come in the MCU. One possibility is that the whole project is funded by Kingpin (Vincent D’Onofrio) and is an attempt to position himself as one of the big power players in the city. For context, Wilson Fisk officially debuted in Hawkeye, followed by his arch-nemesis, Matt Murdock’s (Charlie Cox) brief appearance on Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Otherwise, it’s also possible that the Statue of Liberty has just been restored to its original appearance. The figure is made of copper, but over time, it oxidized, changing its color to green. Its restoration could signal the in-narrative world and MCU’s, in general, rebuilding after the events of the Infinity Saga. It’s also worth remembering that in What If…?, Surtur accidentally melted her’s arm holding the torch and while he quickly soldered it back on, it’s possible that in the live-action universe, something similar happened and there was a need to take Lady Liberty back to basics.

Marvel Studios has mastered the art of incorporating small, seemingly inconsequential details in their films which eventually becomes a major plot point in future Marvel Cinematic Universe projects. The Statue of Liberty being gold in Spider-Man: No Way Home could very well be another example of this. At the very least, audiences can expect the franchise to explain why the figure now holds Captain America’s shield instead of her traditional torch, as it has narrative implications for Sam Wilson’s (Anthony Mackie) new role as the Star-Spangled Avenger.
