Why The MonsterVerses World Needs Godzilla More Than Kong

Nathan (Alexander Skarsgard) said in Godzilla vs. Kong that “the world needs Kong,” but it’s actually Gojira that the planet needs the most. Marketing for the fourth installment in the MonsterVerse has driven home this idea that Kong is this great beacon of hope for humanity, but the story of the movie itself further illustrates the notion that Godzilla is the Titan that the world’s safety depends on.

Godzilla and Kong are regarded as rival alphas in the MonsterVerse, and that has a lot to do with why the two came to blows. As Dr. Ilene Andrews (Rebecca Hall) pointed out in the movie, there can’t be two alphas. Toward the end of the film, Godzilla secured his position as the alpha by getting a definitive victory over Kong.

This outcome may have been disappointing to both Kong fans and the human characters watching, but Godzilla’s actions in each of his three MonsterVerse movies show why it’s he – and not Kong – who is best suited to being the alpha of the Titans. Nathan’s “the world needs Kong” comment fails to take into account the events of Godzilla and Godzilla: King of the Monsters. When the two MUTOs attacked, it was Godzilla who rose up out of the ocean and hunted them down. If he hadn’t, they would have successfully reproduced and caused the birth of more MUTOs in the MonsterVerse. Godzilla’s emergence prevented this disaster from occurring. Godzilla returned in King of the Monsters to combat King Ghidorah, who nearly terraformed the planet.

Godzilla demonstrated in both films that his existence is essential to humanity’s survival. He proved that again in Godzilla vs. Kong by working to stop APEX from reviving Ghidorah in the form of Mechagodzilla. As for Kong, he remained completely oblivious to all three of these threats. He didn’t know about the MUTOs, and simply did not respond to Ghidorah’s call. When APEX was constructing a machine that threatened the existence of all Titans, Kong didn’t have any knowledge of it until he laid eyes on Mechagodzilla at the end of the movie. What this shows is that Kong lacks the awareness that he would need to be the planet’s protector.

Godzilla, on the other hand, has these qualities. When a newly awakened Titan threatens the MonsterVerse, Godzilla always seems to detect it. His history of quick responses to monsters wreaking havoc on the Earth shows why it’s a good thing that he’s the alpha of the Titans. Without an alpha to keep them in check, there’s no telling how much trouble they’d cause. Godzilla’s vigilant behavior makes him the best choice for this role because if it were Kong, the MonsterVerse could already have been plunged into chaos. Kong may do a good job at protecting the humans in his immediate vicinity, but Godzilla maintains a much wider purview. That’s why if a new villain like Destoroyah or Biollante ever comes onto the scene, there’s no doubt that Godzilla will be there to challenge them.
