Warning! This article contains spoilers for Immortal Hulk #49

As the epic finale to Immortal Hulk draws nearer, the series mastermind Al Ewing is introducing fans to an all-new Red Hulk that should have every Marvel fan excited. Joe Fixit is an alternate personality of Bruce Banner’s born of the abuse he suffered as a child, personifying the tough and cool traits Banner wished he possessed. Ewing’s Hulk run dove deep into Fixit as a singular character instead of a simple plot device for Bruce. Now, coming to the end of Immortal Hulk, Ewing has seemingly decided to separate Joe and Bruce entirely by giving Fixit his very own body.

In Immortal Hulk #49 – by Ewing, Joe Bennett, and Ruy Jose – Hulk, She-Hulk and their journalist companion Jackie McGee decide it is time to venture down into the Below-Place and rescue Bruce Banner who has been held captive there by the Leader for some time. The trio meets with the Fantastic Four to use a portal built by Reed Richards that can transport them to this hellish world. During their journey, the portal twists and morphs the travelers and splits Hulk’s two remaining personalities.

The splitting of Hulk and Fixit is seemingly just the beginning of a new saga for Joe after his latest feat against the U-Foes. The last time the Hulk died (in Immortal Hulk #44,) he was blasted with cosmic rays until he was nothing more than a scorched skeleton on the New York pavement, thrusting the souls of Hulk and Joe Fixit into the Below-Place. In order to escape, Fixit tapped into the power source that killed him, the cosmic rays, pumping the glowing red energy through his veins and giving him an alternate source of power from the original gamma radiation.

The portal used by Hulk in his latest issue is bringing his physical body to the Below-Place, which is something that has never happened before. While the Hulk’s consciousnesses are usually split up when he ends up in this hell upon his death, he is made whole once more when he is eventually resurrected. Since this new change is that of his body and not just his mind, the change could be permanent, giving Joe Fixit his own body with his newly acquired power.

While Fixit’s Hulkish form boasted red-glowing veins after being supercharged with cosmic rays, his new form briefly shown in Immortal Hulk #49 was a more solid red color akin to Thaddeus Ross’ Red Hulk from previous stories. Not only does Fixit now seemingly have his own body, but he is also no longer tethered to the other gamma mutates. The former Grey Hulk took in a new form of energy and is now being split from his original form with that energy intact, setting up for him to be the new Red Hulk in Marvel Comics, and every Hulk fan out there should be excited.
