Why Tiger King 2 Failed Despite The Original Being Netfixs Perfect Show

Warning: the following contains spoilers for Tiger King 2.

Tiger King fails to recapture lightning in a bottle as season 2 falls short of the stellar expectations set by season 1. True crime documentary series Tiger King was first released on March 20, 2020, during the early months of the pandemic, a time when most Netflix subscribers had to stay at home. Tiger King explores the stories behind the big cat conservationists, collectors, animal sanctuaries, and commercial zoos across America. Combined, these factors led to Tiger King being one of the biggest series of 2020.

“Tiger King” has also become the nickname of media personality Joe Exotic, also known as Joseph Allen Maldonado-Passage, the former director of the Greater Wynnewood Exotic Animal Park, more commonly known as G.W. Zoo or Tiger King Park. Much of the series’ success can be attributed to the charismatic and deeply conflicted Joe Exotic, who has amassed millions of new fans since the show aired. This is despite the fact that Tiger King ends with Joe getting convicted and sent to prison for a 22-year sentence, not just for 17 federal charges of animal abuse, but also for 2 counts of murder for hire when he plotted to kill animal rights activist and Big Cat Rescue founder Carole Baskin.

Tiger King season 2, on paper, has more than enough material for an interesting follow-up to the original series. Although Tiger King is essentially an expose on the horrible treatment of exotic animals throughout different facilities in the U.S., many fans of the series have largely focused on Joe’s wild personality and his feud with Carole. This can be observed in the different memes and social media pages that have kept the Tiger King fandom alive and continuously growing, even after the hype surrounding the series has died down. Moreover, out of the different big cat owners with questionable practices tackled in the docu-series, only Joe Exotic is in prison, while the others are free to roam and continue to run America’s controversial big cat industry. Despite all this, the new Tiger King falls short of the first season’s impact. Indeed, season 2 fails to answer the biggest questions from the original Tiger King series. And despite being almost as trashy as season 1, the events and so-called revelations covered by Tiger King season 2 simply do not live up to the hype.

Tiger King Was Only So Successful Because Of The Real World Context

Why Tiger King 2 Failed Despite The Original Being Netfixs Perfect Show

This isn’t to say that Tiger King 2 has no real-world context behind it. In fact, the second season serves as a fair follow-up to the events of season 1. At the same time, Joe Exotic is in prison. Given the logistical implications of this scenario, this means that Joe couldn’t be the main character again – certainly not in the way that he dominated the first season. Most of the new content featuring Joe are shots of him communicating from prison. And they’re not exactly as compelling as seeing Joe perform his antics and plot against other big cat owners from the G.W. Zoo in Oklahoma. Meanwhile, Carole Baskin, who is Tiger King’s second biggest draw, refused to have anything to do with the series again, mainly because of how she was portrayed as the main suspect behind her husband Don Lewis’ disappearance/alleged murder. With both Joe and Carole falling into secondary roles, the real stories in Tiger King 2 cannot compete with the original series’ extremely compelling content.

Tiger King 2 Answers Nothing & Falls Into Its Own Trap

Why Tiger King 2 Failed Despite The Original Being Netfixs Perfect Show

Tiger King 2 was released a little over a year since the first season debuted on Netflix. This simply wasn’t enough time for the stories unraveled by season 1 to continue developing. And as a result, there really isn’t much to cover in terms of story updates. Notably, the most interesting reveals in Tiger King 2 are focused around the disappearance of Don Lewis, Carole’s missing husband and former co-owner of Big Cat Rescue. Tiger King is technically a true-crime documentary, but despite what the Tiger King 2 trailer suggests, this isn’t where the show’s strengths truly lie.

Through interviews with Lewis’ family and associates, law enforcement, psychic detectives, and internet sleuths, the second season reveals the details of the ongoing investigations into Don Lewis’ disappearance, including the mounting evidence that could potentially confirm Carole’s direct involvement. Despite all this, no further answers about Lewis are revealed. Meanwhile, although it’s interesting to see how Joe is capitalizing on his viral fame and trying to use it to get out of prison, even this story is left hanging. That said, the revelations about Tim Stark’s case are compelling, but that’s about as far as Tiger King 2’s updates can go.

Tiger King 2’s Story Has Been Better Answered Elsewhere

Why Tiger King 2 Failed Despite The Original Being Netfixs Perfect Show

The fact is that Louis Theroux’s documentaries about Joe make Tiger King 2 look inconsequential to the docu-series main hook. While Tiger King 2 offers minor follow-ups about its main cast, Theroux’s 2021 documentary Shooting Joe Exotic tackles the massive amount of fan mail Joe has received since Tiger King, the animal cruelty of Joe’s traveling mall zoos, a testimony from Joe’s former husband John Finlay confirming Joe’s plans to harm Carole, and more. Theroux also shot a documentary called America’s Most Dangerous Pets in 2011, which includes Joe talking about Carole and other previously unseen details about Joe’s directorship of G.W. Zoo. Compared to Tiger King 2, Theroux’s documentaries are more focused on the one subject that has captured the attention of most fans: Joe Exotic, the Tiger King himself. This makes Shooting Joe Exotic a more compelling follow-up to Tiger King than the docu-series’ official second season.

Tiger King 2 Believes Its Own Hype Too Much

Why Tiger King 2 Failed Despite The Original Being Netfixs Perfect Show

The pandemic may have falsely hyped up Tiger King’s reach and success. This led showrunners to cover story updates just one year after the original series, even though there weren’t any concrete updates to cover. Ironically, although Tiger King’s massive impact on American culture is undeniable, it was only really tackled in Tiger King 2’s first episode. Instead of riding the Tiger King hype, Tiger King 2 could’ve examined and further explored the stories emerging from this hype instead. This direction could’ve led the documentary team to discover how Tiger King’s stories and Joe Exotic’s lethal charisma impacted ordinary Americans, possibly revealing characters that rival even Joe’s eccentricity. By believing in its own hype instead of using that hype to discover new and documentary-worthy stories, Tiger King 2 shoots itself in the paw.

Tiger King 2 Still Succeeds In Its Own Way

At the same time, Tiger King 2 did a couple of things right. Although Tiger King 2 leaves out facts that would’ve made the season more compelling, it does present new evidence from Jeff Lowe and Allen Glover pinning the federal government for misdeeds while handling Joe’s case. This could mean that Joe could actually get his sentence reduced. More importantly, Tiger King 2 reveals that the more than 100 tigers from Joe Exotic, Jeff Lowe, and Tim Stark’s zoos were relocated to a much more comfortable and spacious wildlife conservation facility. Amid all the controversy surrounding the U.S. big cat industry, it’s a relief to find out that the industry’s main victims, the tigers, are finally safe.
