Why TR Knight Left Grey’s Anatomy and Why He Returned

For five seasons, actor T.R. Knight played Dr. George O’Malley on the hit ABC medical drama Grey’s Anatomy. George was one of five interns that formed M.A.G.I.C., the acronym fans still use to describe doctors Meredith Grey, Alex Karev, George, Izzie Stevens and Cristina Yang — most of whom have long since left the show. To this day, fans still feel his departure was alarmingly sudden, and rumors about the actor’s true reasons for leaving the show still circulate over a decade later.

George was a widely beloved character on the show, and the circumstances surrounding the end to his character’s story made his absence even more heartbreaking. Now that the actor made a single-episode guest appearance in Season 17, fans are once again asking: Why did Knight leave? And what made him willingly come back?

Who was George O’Malley on Grey’s Anatomy?

Dr. George O’Malley quickly befriended Izzie, Cristina and Meredith when they met at Seattle Grace Hospital at the start of their shared medical residency. He was smart and determined, though a little self-conscious and clumsy at times. Though George made plenty of mistakes both as an intern and in his relationships, it was made clear time and again that he was a genuinely good person. This was further reinforced when he died suddenly and tragically in Season 5.

It was revealed that George stepped in front of a bus to save a woman’s life. Though the doctors at Seattle Grace could not save him, he was long remembered for his selfless sacrifice. But the character’s sudden departure from the series never sat well with viewers. Many still wonder if there was something going on behind the scenes.

Why did T.R. Knight Leave Grey’s Anatomy?

When a character leaves a show — especially when they are killed off — there are always questions surrounding their departure. The possibility of on-set drama usually comes up, but Knight never directly attributed Isaiah Washington’s homophobic comments toward him as the reason he left. He eventually revealed that leaving the show was his choice. Unsure of the reasoning behind some of his character’s choices and being mostly absent for the first half of the show’s fifth season made him realize moving on from Grey’s was the best option for him despite the success the experience had brought his way.

Knight told Entertainment Weekly, “There just comes a time when it’s so clear that moving on is the best decision. There are a lot of people who would like to be in my position. But in the end, I need to be fulfilled in my work.” So George O’Malley left the show as dramatically as one can in the fictional medical realm, and Knight left his fellow cast of actors that, like the characters they portrayed, weren’t without their own flaws. After all that, though, Knight returned to the show for one episode in Season 17.

How Did George O’Malley Return to Grey’s Anatomy?

Season 17 of Grey’s Anatomy — dubbed by many as “the COVID season” — portrayed the hardships the doctors of Grey Sloan Memorial faced during the Shondaland universe’s version of the COVID-19 pandemic. Early on in the season, Meredith enters a coma, and her subconscious state of existence manifests as the show’s star alone on a beach. As time passes, she encounters several people from her past, mainly characters who died throughout the course of the show. Knight’s George O’Malley was one of those characters.

Speaking with Deadline about George’s surprise return, Knight admitted that he was skeptical when showrunner Krista Vernoff approached him about returning for an episode and mentioned the idea of closure. It was Knight’s husband that convinced him to say yes. “We were talking about that idea of closure and he was saying that sometimes closure’s shutting a door, and sometimes it’s revisiting a familiar room, and finding what brought you joy. And it just hit me.” Being on set for his appearance “on the beach” was an experience Knight says he’ll never forget. He continued, “And then to have Ellen, and Chandra, and Jim… To have all of that, it was just unlike any other experience I’ve ever had in my entire life, in my 47 years.”

New episodes of Grey’s Anatomy premiere Thursdays at 9 PM ET on ABC and can be streamed the following day on Hulu.
