Why Venom 2 Retcons A Major Marvel Movie Event

Warning: Contains SPOILERS for Venom: Let There Be Carnage.

The Venom: Let There Be Carnage post-credits scene transports Eddie and Venom (Tom Hardy) to the MCU in a shocking twist, but the film retcons the end of Spider-Man: Far From Home in the process. After defeating Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal) in Far From Home, Spider-Man (Tom Holland) has his Peter Parker secret identity revealed to the world by J. Jonah Jameson (J. K. Simmons). That scene plays out in the Venom 2 post-credits scene as well, but with a notable change.

Prior to the end of Venom: Let There Be Carnage, it was believed that the series took place in an entirely different canon from the core MCU. While Sony has allowed Spider-Man to be included in the MCU through a deal with Disney, the rest of Sony’s Marvel characters have remained in an independent Spider-Man cinematic universe featuring Morbius, Kraven the Hunter, Venom, and others. The ending of Venom 2 erases that separation, however, as Eddie and Venom are mysteriously teleported to the MCU to see Spider-Man’s identity being revealed on TV.

For the most part, the Venom: Let There Be Carnage post-credits scene stays loyal to the original scene from Spider-Man: Far From Home, but it makes one notable change. In the shot shown on Eddie’s TV, Spider-Man is seen with his mask removed, revealing the face of Holland’s Peter Parker underneath. This change was likely made to make it clear to viewers that Venom was brought to the MCU, as a masked Spider-Man could have left Eddie’s true location somewhat ambiguous. Furthermore, the area surrounding Spider-Man is the same as that from Far From Home.

What’s more curious is that Venom seems to recognize Holland’s Spider-Man specifically when he sees him on the TV. It’s possible that the symbiote hivemind extends across the entire multiverse, giving Hardy’s Venom some memories of Topher Grace’s Spider-Man 3 Venom. But if that were the case, he’d be aware of Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man, not Hollands, who hasn’t even encountered Venom before.

Of course, it’s also possible that seeing Spider-Man’s red suit and logo are enough to jog Venom’s memory regardless of the face. Now he, like everyone else in the MCU after Spider-Man: Far From Home, knows Spider-Man’s secret identity. What he’ll do with it, however, is another question. Hardy’s Venom is an antihero after all, not a villain. Still, if Spider-Man: No Way Home has Venom in it – an increasingly likely theory – it’s possible that a big-screen showdown between Holland’s Spider-Man and Hardy’s Venom could finally take place in the MCU.
