Will Halo Fans Like Red Vs Blue Zero

The new season of Red vs. Blue, called Red vs. Blue: Zero, has some departures from the Halo series that inspired it. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, as the show attempts to step out from behind Halo’s shadow and into seemingly new territory. But what will Halo fans think of the new Red vs. Blue: Zero?

When it first premiered in 2003, Red vs. Blue relied on its slapstick comedy and quick-hitting punchlines. The story was told within a recognizable Halo location (Blood Gulch), with familiar character models, and with inside jokes that would have most Halo fans cackling. The show has progressively gotten more action-focused as the years have passed, and Red vs. Blue: Zero is probably the most action-heavy season yet.

The show became popular enough that it even had a non-canon mini-series to coincide with the release of Halo: Reach. With the release of Halo: Infinite delayed but still coming fairly soon, Red vs. Blue: Zero appears to be an attempt to pull the series away from the Halo games that helped define it. While the changes inject a certain amount of freshness into the show, it’s also a risky move that could alienate a few diehard fans. Overall, though, most Halo fans should enjoy the new Red vs. Blue: Zero.

Why Halo Fans Should Enjoy Red vs. Blue: Zero

Perhaps what’s most interesting about Red vs. Blue: Zero is that several of its weapons, monsters, and even characters aren’t from Halo. These character designs aren’t just premium skins from previous Halo games either. Eagle-eyed viewers have noticed some monsters coming from the cancelled Paragon from Epic Games, and multiple weapons and character models are borrowed from Ying Pei Games. In this way, Red vs. Blue: Zero marks its biggest departure from its traditional Halo fare.

The biggest reason for this may be because of the limited assets available. Red vs. Blue has been running for eighteen seasons, and with Halo: Infinite getting delayed and facing multiple development issues, there won’t be new assets for the team at Rooster Teeth to use on their show. The new action sequences and characters are still well done and should please most fans of the show – and fans of the Halo series as well.

People who watched the first season of Red vs. Blue and are now jumping back in for Red vs. Blue: Zero may be shocked by how much has changed. The newest season of the web series appears to be an attempt to move away from the more Halo game-centric earlier seasons. Still, differences aside, Halo fans should like Red vs. Blue: Zero just fine.
