Will PBSs Victoria Ever Come Back

Many people enjoy watching period dramas, particularly those series centered around the lives of various royals throughout history. One of the more popular royal shows is Netflix’s The Crown, which will premiere its fifth season this November. While Netflix is home to both The Crown and Bridgerton, many British period dramas have called PBS home for decades. The most notable of the PBS period dramas has to be Downton Abbey — which will receive a second film on May 20.

Sanditon is another PBS period drama — which recently had its Season 2 finale after the series was canceled in December 2019. Sanditon was even renewed for Season 3, after fans thought the beloved series was over almost three years ago. Fans of PBS’s Victoria can only hold out hope that it will meet the same fate as Sanditon after the last episode aired in May 2019.

Victoria premiered its first season in the United States on PBS in January 2017. The first season chronicled Queen Victoria’s early reign at merely 18 years old in the mid-1800s until the birth of her first child — also named Victoria. Doctor Who star Jenna Coleman portrayed Queen Victoria, opposite co-star Tom Hughes as the monarch’s husband, Prince Albert. Hughes and Coleman’s electric on-screen chemistry first developed on-set, which quickly blossomed into a real-life relationship.

As Victoria continued, the series tackled topics like a failed assassination attempt on the queen and the Anglo-Afghan War. By the time Season 3 aired, Victoria and Albert had six children. The couple also had their disagreements — particularly about how their eldest son (who became King Edward VII of England) should be treated. While some historical events made it into the series, several elements have been added for dramatic purposes, including Prince Albert’s father and Victoria’s feelings for Prime Minister Lord Melbourne.

The last episode viewers saw was the Season 3 finale, which ended in an explosive cliffhanger, with Albert collapsing into his wife’s arms. Fans are also clueless whether Duchess Sophie left her toxic marriage to run off with the queen’s footman Joseph, and if Victoria’s relationship with her troublesome half-sister Feodora was ever repaired. With so many unanswered questions, it’s almost inhumane to end a series on that note. However, it’s unclear if Hughes and Coleman could continue their electric chemistry, considering the couple called it quits in July 2020.

Victoria’s Instagram page hasn’t been updated since July 2019. ITV released a statement in July 2021 that confirmed there were currently “no plans” to revisit the series. However, ITV did state that production could possibly resume again someday, which gave fans a small sliver of hope. Those who looked up the history of Queen Victoria would have discovered Prince Albert didn’t die for another 10 years after he was shown collapsed in the Season 3 finale. Victoria and Feodora also developed a close friendship. Despite the knowledge of actual historical events, fans are still eager for Victoria to make a comeback.
