Community first debuted on NBC in September 2009 and followed a study group at Greendale Community College. The comedy starred Joel McHale, Alison Brie, Gillian Jacobs, Donald Glover, Danny Pudi, Yvette Nicole Brown, and Chevy Chase as the core cast. The series also included memorable performances from names like Ken Jeong, Jim Rash, and numerous others. After the conclusion of the show’s fifth season in 2014, NBC axed the comedy but it was revived for a sixth and final season on Yahoo! Screen.

The Community Movie Hasn’t Been Confirmed Yet

Even though there have been talks of a Community movie since before the TV series ended, no official news of its development has been confirmed. Harmon took a little time off following the final season before insinuating that he was getting the ball rolling on ideas. In 2017, there was talk that Harmon discussed a Community movie with director Justin Lin (F9). Since then, Harmon has been noncommittal whereas the cast seems very interested in reprising their roles. The cast, including McHale, Pudi, and Brown has been outspoken about reuniting for a film. In February 2020, Brie was asked about plans for a film and she hinted (via Reddit) that discussions have picked up steam.

Without any confirmation for plans of a Community sequel movie, it’s nearly impossible to predict a release date. That said, if it ever comes to fruition, it’s almost guaranteed to be released on a streaming platform. Since the series was initially born on NBC, why not make a movie to air on the network’s upcoming streaming service, Peacock? The new service is expected to launch later this year and it would be smart to develop some new projects based on legacy titles. Debuting a Community film within the first year of the launch could be very beneficial. It would also be appealing to many potential subscribers, especially those who recently became interested in the series through other streaming services.

When looking at the cast for a Community movie, McHale, Brie, Jacobs, Pudi, Brown, Rush, and Jeong have shared their interest. It would be interesting to see if Donald Glover, who left Community in season 5 would return after coming to terms with his exit. Harmon’s script and Glover’s availability would be the best deciding factors. Chase’s Pierce Hawthorne was killed off so there’s not a good chance he would return. Other supporting cast members, including Paget Brewster’s Frankie Dart, could potentially be brought back.

What The Community Movie’s Story Could Be

Harmon once dropped a joke about Troy’s whereabouts being the focus of a movie at a San Diego Comic-Con panel, but that actually makes a lot of sense. Glover’s character went off with LeVar Burton to sail around the world and supposedly was captured by pirates off of the Gulf of Mexico. A movie could reunite much of the core characters as they search for their long lost friend. After going their separate ways at the end of Community season 6, there could be another disastrous event that brings the study group back together to save Greendale. With Harmon in charge, the possibilities could truly be endless.
