While The Forever Purge has been touted as the final entry in the franchise, it’s rare that a horror series stays dead, making a Purge 6 possible. There’s nothing Hollywood loves more than a consistently performing franchise, to the point that they often begin plans for a movie to spawn one before said movie has even been released. In some cases though, a movie it’s unlikely most expected to become a franchise starter ends up leading to a veritable cash cow.

This happens a lot in horror, often with the original movie being made on a modest budget. Halloween is the most famous example of that among top horror franchises, but Saw also hailed from relatively modest origins, as did The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Paranormal Activity, and many more. For its part, The Purge released in 2013 to mostly negative reviews, but defied the critics by debuting at #1 and raking in nearly $90 million on a budget of only $3 million. Three Purge sequel or prequel movies have followed so far, all of them making similarly hefty profit margins.

When The Purge 5, later officially titled The Forever Purge, was announced, it was made clear that franchise creator James DeMonaco was planning it to be the end of the franchise. Yet, plans change, and it looks like a Purge 6 might be in the cards.

As of this writing, the answer to whether or not a Purge 6 will ever be made is uncertain, but the possibility is a fairly strong one. As confirmed by DeMonaco, the Purge franchise creator does indeed have an idea in mind for a Purge 6. He says he originally planned for The Forever Purge to end things, but that changed when he got inspiration for a follow-up. However, whether or not a sixth film actually happens will depend on how The Forever Purge performs at the box office.

While The Purge 6 has yet to be greenlit by producer Blumhouse or studio Universal, if it does get the go ahead, past scheduling gives a rough idea of when to expect its arrival in theaters. All five Purge movies so far have released during the summer, in either June or July. There was a one-year gap between the first two, and two-year gaps between Anarchy and Election Year, and Election Year and First Purge. The Forever Purge would’ve released in 2020 if not for Coronavirus, making for another two-year gap. Logically, that means fans should expect a hypothetical Purge 6 sometime in summer 2023.

The Purge 6 Cast

It’s hard to predict who might star in The Purge 6, because the main cast tends to almost entirely change between entries in the franchise. One fan favorite survivor who might return is Leo Barnes, as actor Frank Grillo teased a possible Purge return back in January 2021. The surviving cast of The Forever Purge could also certainly return, such as Ana de la Reguera’s Adela and Tenoch Huerta’s Juan, as well as anti-Purge politican Charlie Roan (Elizabeth Mitchell) from Election Year.

The Purge 6 Story Details

While creator DeMonaco – who directed the first three Purges and has written all five – has yet to reveal what his idea for The Purge 6 entails, The Forever Purge left clear room for a sequel, ending on an unresolved note. The Forever Purge ends with the NFFA being toppled by out of control Purgers who’ve decided to “unleash the beast” on a permanent basis. Pockets of Americans are said to be fighting back, while many actually fled to safety in Canada or Mexico. The Purge 6 could well center on a new American Civil War, with one side fighting for anarchy and bloodshed and the other to restore order.
