Windows Notepad Dark Mode How To Enable It Manually

Microsoft started rolling out the Dark Mode option for its classic Notepad app in early December 2021 with Windows 11 build 22509 for Insiders in the Dev channel. Dark mode has become a standard feature in almost all mainstream apps on mobile, and most developers have also been updating their desktop applications with the much-wanted feature. Most of Microsoft’s built-in Windows apps, including Notepad, didn’t have the dark mode for the longest time, but that changed with the rollout of the new option to Notepad in late 2021.

Alongside dark mode, several other features were also rolled out to Notepad as part of the same update, including the addition of a multi-step ‘undo’ option that lets users go back multiple steps. This is a significant update over earlier app versions, which only allowed users to undo one action. There’s also an updated right-click menu and a combined interface for the Search and Find-and-Replace options, which used to have two different popups in earlier editions of Notepad.

According to a Microsoft blog post, Notepad will adapt to Windows’ system theme preferences by default, but users can manually set it to dark mode. To do that, open Notepad and click on the Settings button (gear icon) at the top-right corner to open Notepad settings. Now click on ‘App Theme’ to select between three different display options: ‘Light,’ Dark’ and ‘Use system setting.’ Each will come with a radio button next to it, and clicking on one will auto-save the selection. So select ‘Dark’ to ensure that the app retains its dark mode irrespective of the Windows system theme. The Settings page will also allow users to set their font, including style and size, so users can also set those options to their liking.

Notepad Still Lacks Rich Text Features

Notepad is Microsoft’s plain text editor that was initially released in 1983 before being integrated into Windows 1.0. It has since remained a part of subsequent Windows editions with only relatively minor modifications, which makes the update in December 2021 a major one in the history of Windows Notepad. The app looks and feels less clunky than its earlier avatars with the new features.

Despite the massive feature drop, Notepad still lacks many of the abilities of Wordpad, the rich-text editor that Microsoft bundles with Windows. That said, Microsoft will likely keep it that way to differentiate between its relatively simple plain-text editor and the more capable rich text editor. With its multi-function ribbon on top, the ability to edit .docx files, handle HTTP links, and work with formatted rich text, Wordpad is closer in functionality to MS Word than Notepad. However, it still lacks the dark mode of its simpler sibling.
