Perrin’s eyes suddenly turn yellow in Wheel of Time episode 5. Here’s how Perrin is connected to the wolves and what it means for his story.

Perrin Aybara’s yellow eyes and the arrival of the wolfpack in The Wheel of Time episode 5 have major implications for his story in the show; here are his wolf powers explained. Amazon’s TV adaptation of Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time series has yet to explain the significance of the wolves. Still, it’s become clear that these animals are vital to what comes next for actor Marcus Rutherford’s character and that Perrin has some sort of connection and even sway over the powerful animals.
A pack of wolves with mysterious intentions has been in Perrin’s orbit ever since a strange encounter in the woods in episode 2. Their role in the show immediately raised questions when one licked his wound. For reasons Perrin and Egwene al’Vere (Madeleine Madden) didn’t understand, the wolves chased them into a desert region but avoided close contact; later, Egwene remarked it was almost as though the wolves had led them to a well-traveled wagon path. In Wheel of Time episode 5, the wolves directly involved themselves in the plot by attacking the Children of the Light. Much to the shock of Eamon Valda (Abdul Salis), Perrin displayed impressive strength and his eyes abruptly turned yellow. Valda originally suspected that it was Egwene who possessed powers, but now it appears that both characters have abilities.
Unlike the situation with Egwene, what’s going on with Perrin in Amazon’s Wheel of Time show can’t be explained by the One Power. Perrin is special in an entirely different way. The first book in the series, The Eye of the World, revealed what his yellow eyes signify, and how he stands apart from the other Two Rivers characters. Here’s why Perrin’s eyes turned yellow in Wheel of Time episode 5, and what it means for his future.
Perrin Is A Wolfbrother In Wheel of Time
It was learned in The Eye of the World that Perrin is what the wolves call a “Wolfbrother”. Wolfbrothers are people who possess the incredibly rare ability to telepathically communicate with wolves. When a Wolfbrother appears, wolves in the surrounding areas are naturally drawn to his location. Shortly after their psychic connection with wolves begins to develop is when the Wolfbrother’s eyes acquire their yellow color, which is their biggest identifying feature. To the wolves, Wolfbrothers are members of their pack and are treated accordingly. This is what motivated the wolves to intervene when the Whitecloak Questioner started torturing Perrin. They telepathically sensed that Perrin was in great distress and rushed to the aid of their Wolfbrother.
Perrin’s Wolf Powers Explained
As a Wolfbrother, Perrin is so highly attuned with wolves that his range of telepathic communication extends across several miles in the Wheel of Time books. All of the wolves that are in his proximity are linked to his mind, making it possible for him to know exactly how many are in the area, and where they are. In addition to that, being a Wolfbrother comes with a number of benefits, one of which is vastly improved vision. Perrin’s ability to see in the dark is far superior to that of any normal human. Plus, Wolfbrothers have a heightened sense of smell. What’s so unusual about that particular power is that Perrin (and the wolves) can smell emotions. They can detect fear, madness, anger, and more. And, though Egwene’s magic did burn through the ropes that were binding Perrin, the scene hinted that he may boast an additional wolf power that wasn’t in the books – superhuman strength.
One of the most unique aspects of being a Wolfbrother is their connection to the Tel’aran’rhiod (or the Wolf Dream). There are certain Wheel of Time characters who have access to a One Power ability known as Dreamwalking. By Dreamwalking, a person can enter the Tel’aran’rhiod dimension. Through the Tel’aran’rhiod, Dreamwalkers can meet each other, regardless of how far apart they are in the waking world. In the Tel’aran’rhiod, Dreamwalkers can use their thoughts to control and manipulate everything around them. Since Dreamwalking stems from the One Power, nearly everyone that comes into the Tel’aran’rhiod are channelers. One exception to this is the Wolfbrothers, who can enter Tel’aran’rhiod without Dreamwalking. Since Wolfbrothers have greater control over this dimension than even the Aes Sedai, Perrin is considered to be incredibly powerful in the Tel’aran’rhiod.
How Wolves Fit Into Wheel of Time’s World
Wheel of Time’s wolves come complete with their own culture. As Perrin will most likely learn, each of the wolves has its own name. They also possess some degree of awareness of several key concepts, including Wheel of Time’s Dragon Reborn prophecy, the One Power, the Aes Sedai, the Trollocs, and the Dark One. To them, the Dragon Reborn is a well-respected and powerful warrior that they refer to as the Shadowkiller. His enemy, the Dark One, has been dubbed “Heartfang” by the wolves. The wolves view the Dark One and his Trolloc minions as their hated enemies. The vast amount of knowledge shared by the wolves in Wheel of Time’s world can be attributed at least partially to their place in the Pattern. Whereas humans die and get reincarnated without knowing any details about who they were before, wolves remember all of the lives they’ve led.
How Wheel of Time Changed Perrin’s Wolfbrother Transformation
Wheel of Time may have made an important change to how Perrin learns about his wolf powers. In The Eye of the World, Perrin discovered his wolf connection when he met Elyas Machera, a former Aes Sedai Warder who isolated himself from human civilization to live with his wolfpack. It was Elyas who explained to Perrin why his eyes were yellow and what they meant. In the book, his Wolfbrother transformation wasn’t connected to the fight with the Whitecloaks as it was actually Moiraine and Lan who saved Perrin and Egwene in the source material.
Since no actor has reportedly been cast for Elyas, it’s been speculated that Wheel of Time has removed him from the story. If that’s the case, a different character may have to take Elyas’ place by telling Perrin about Wolfbrothers. Alternatively, Wheel of Time could be saving its deep dive into the world of wolves for later. Comments from showrunner Rafe Judkins indicate that Elyas might be one of the mystery characters slated to appear in Wheel of Time season 2. Elyas’ introduction could be what sets Perrin’s Wolfbrother arc in motion.
What Perrin’s Wolf Powers Mean For His Future
The fact that the wolves regard Perrin as one of their own means that they’ll be valuable allies to the character going forward. Perrin’s wolf powers were a factor throughout several of his adventures in the Wheel of Time books. There’s also the matter of the Tel’aran’rhiod. Having the ability to traverse the dream world like an Aes Sedai was integral to the role he played, and the same is likely to be the case for Amazon’s show. In this way, he can contribute greatly to the fight against Wheel of Time’s Dark One and the Forsaken by battling the villains who regularly visit the Tel’aran’rhiod. And with the wolves on his side as foes of the Dark One in The Wheel of Time, he’ll be able to count on their help when he’s in the waking world.
