Witcher Prequel Show Loses Star Jodie TurnerSmith

Netflix’s The Witcher: Blood Origin has lost star Jodie Turner-Smith due to a scheduling issue. The upcoming series is a prequel to the streamer’s massively successful show The Witcher, which is based on the book series by Andrzej Sapkowski. Season 1 of the original show released in December 2019 and performed well enough for Netflix to soon look at expanding The Witcher’s world. An animated spinoff movie, The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf, was announced in January 2020 and will focus on Geralt’s mentor Vesemir, telling his origin story. The Witcher: Blood Origin was announced later that same year in July.

The new show is a live-action limited series set 1200 years before Geralt’s story. As the title suggests, it will focus on the beginnings of the Witchers. In January 2021, Turner-Smith was cast in The Witcher prequel as the series lead Éile, a warrior turned traveling musician who must fight again. Turner-Smith’s casting was one of the first substantial pieces of information about The Witcher: Blood Origin, which hasn’t started filming yet. Now, the series has a road block to overcome before production begins.

Per Deadline, Turner-Smith has exited The Witcher: Blood Origin after the start of shooting was delayed. This led to a scheduling conflict for the actor, and Netflix is now recasting the role of Éile.

This news is disappointing for those who enjoy Turner-Smith’s work and were excited to see her as the lead in The Witcher prequel series. The actor is very much a star on the rise and seemed like a great addition to Netflix’s expanding franchise. Unfortunately, it sounds like Turner-Smith’s departure was unavoidable, possibly another side effect of the ongoing pandemic, which has wreaked havoc on production schedules. Actor exits, though always a part of the industry, have increased over the last year for that reason.

Though it would have been great to see what Turner-Smith did with the character of Éile, another actor could wind up doing her justice as well. It remains to be seen if another big name like Turner-Smith will nab the role or if Netflix will switch tactics a bit and go with a lesser-known performer. Hopefully, a casting announcement is made soon, paving the way for The Witcher: Blood Origin to begin production. As of now, the show doesn’t have a release date and likely won’t for some time. Luckily, The Witcher has finally completed filming on season 2, so viewers will have that to keep them entertained while waiting for the upcoming spinoffs.
