Wheel Of Time Who & What Is The Dragon Reborn

Warning: This article will spoil the identity of the Dragon Reborn from the Wheel of Time books.

In Wheel of Time, the Dragon Reborn is the subject of a prophecy about a person who has the potential to both save (and doom) the world. This mysterious figure in Wheel of Time’s world is at the heart of every character’s story in the books, and presumably, Amazon’s TV adaptation. The Dragon Reborn has been mentioned heavily in the marketing for the series.

Amazon’s new show is set in a vast and unique fantasy world born from the mind of Robert Jordan. Jordan’s Wheel of Time books introduced readers to all sorts of characters, locations, and concepts. Much of what transpires in the books is built around the One Power, a force that fuels some of the characters with powerful abilities. Both the books’ heroes and the villains use the One Power to wage war with each other. The Aes Sedai primarily use the One Power for good, whereas the minions of the Dark One use it to further their evil ambitions. The goals of both sides hinge on the Dragon Reborn, whose identity is a great mystery in the first installment.

The Dragon Reborn is important because he’s the reincarnation of Lews Therin Telamon aka The Dragon, who has a reputation as the most powerful channeler of the One Power in all of history. Supposedly, he possesses the capability to defeat the Dark One. Eventually, it was discovered that the Dragon Reborn was reborn as a sheepherder named Rand al’Thor. Rand had lived his whole life in a small village not knowing that he was actually Lews Therin reborn as a new person. He had no firsthand knowledge of his old life or his fight with the Dark One.

In the books, the Dragon Reborn is a prophecy that instills fear amongst many civilizations on account of the horrors committed by Lews Therin thousands of years ago. Due to the Dark One corrupting the male half of the One Power with his touch, Lews Therin and his followers developed insanity and caused mass destruction in an event that was later labeled the Breaking of the World. Afterward, the Dragon killed his wife, children, and friends without realizing what he was doing. When he recovered, he killed himself out of guilt, but it was prophesized for centuries that one day his spirit would return.

Based on what was known about the life of Lews Therin, it was commonly believed that the Dragon Reborn would be the hero to save everyone from the Dark One. Over the years, other male characters in Wheel of Time who can use the One Power, such as Logain Ablar, have falsely claimed to be the Dragon Reborn and are dubbed “False Dragons”. There was typically widespread relief among the people when a male channeler turned out be a False Dragon as opposed to the real thing, especially since the Dragon Reborn was expected to follow in Lews Therin’s footsteps and bring about a second Breaking of the World. For Rand, this was a terrifying thought, as it meant that he not only was he fated to become the world’s savior, but his destiny was also to destroy it.
