Uber Ride Changes Explained What You Need To Know As Cities Reopen

Uber has announced new safety measures that are going into effect from Monday, May 18. These new safety standards have been designed to protect riders and drivers as some cities start to open up again in a bid to resume the economy and life in a post-pandemic world.

It’s been over 2 months since many were ordered to stay home and self-quarantine due to COVID-19 lockdown orders. To slow the spread of coronavirus and save lives, all non-essential businesses were ordered to stay closed with only essential businesses – grocery stores, pharmacies, gas stations, banks and post offices – allowed to stay open during the time. Likewise, it was recommended that only essential and emergency workers take taxis and ride-sharing services to get to work and even in the company’s ads, Uber encouraged all riders to stay at home, even though that tends to go against its business model.

This week, Uber CEO, Dara Khosrowshahi revealed that Uber will be proceeding with caution as riders take their “second first trip.” Khosrowshahi emphasized that over the last 2 months, while Uber was encouraging riders to stay home, the company’s tech and safety team have been hard at work building a new Uber experience. Khosrowshahi stressed that Uber has always had a continued commitment to safety, but now the new focus will be on hygiene, health and face coverings for everyone. In fact, to make this happen Khosrowshahi revealed that Uber has allocated $50 million to purchase supplies for drivers, including masks and hand sanitizers. The Uber website now details some of the measures that will be in place when you step foot in your next Uber ride and below is an overview of some of the main changes.

Uber’s Safety Checklist For Both Drivers & Riders

It will be mandatory for every Uber driver before going back to work to confirm via a new Go Online Checklist, that they’ve taken certain safety measures and are wearing a mask or face cover. Drivers will be asked to take a selfie of themselves wearing the mask which must be verified by Uber’s new technology. Those not wearing a mask will not be able to drive. There will be a similar checklist for riders. Before each trip, riders must confirm that they are wearing a mask and have washed their hands and sanitized them. Passengers will not be allowed to sit in the front seat with the driver and back windows should remain open for ventilation. Furthermore, the maximum number of passengers on an UberX ride has been reduced from 4 to 3. Uber is also partnering with leaders in cleanliness, such as Clorox and Unilever, to ensure all vehicles are regularly cleaned and sanitized. In addition, drivers and riders are encouraged to cancel trips (without a penalty) if they don’t feel any of these measures are in place or don’t feel safe.

These new Uber changes will remain in effect through the end of June and at that time, Uber says it will reassess and see if they need to continue or not. Lyft has also recently added new safety measures, highlighting that this is not just an Uber thing but another example of how society as a whole is changing the way it operates. However, while companies do what they can to limit the likelihood of another wave or outbreak, it is up to individuals to do their part too. Something which Uber’s announcement subtly touches on with riders having their own rules that they’ll need to abide by the next time they want to catch a ride.
