WWE Invades World Of Tanks In SummerSlam Crossover Event

To celebrate the biggest party of the summer, the WWE is teaming up with World of Tanks for a very special in-game event. No, players won’t be seeing Tank Abbot riding into battle, and D-Generation X isn’t trying to get into WCW’s arena in Atlanta. Instead, WWE continues its growing interest in partnering with live service video games to promote its biggest pay per view events. In the past few years, WWE has lent their larger than life characters to special modes in Brawlhalla and Rocket League, as well as a brief Internet-only feud between undead mortician The Undertaker and famous E3 photographer Dr Disrespect.

WWE is no stranger to their own video games as well, producing a long-running series of wrestling simulations, first published by THQ, and then brought into the fold at 2K. What’s now known as the WWE 2K series still attracts a large fanbase despite vocal detractors stating that it hasn’t changed things up in years. In 2020, the developers at Yukes are not releasing a yearly entry for the first time in a long time, and WWE’s video game presence will instead consist of Saber Interactive’s more arcadey WWE 2K Battlegrounds.

As part of the new World of Tanks partnership, several new collector tanks inspired by WWE legends and current superstars will be available in the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 editions of the game. Tanks based on Andrew The Giant, The Undertaker, Becky Lynch, Sgt. Slaughter and “Stone Cold” Steve Austin will be free to all players to start. A further update in August will introduce more tanks, this time based on Roman Reigns, “Macho Man” Randy Savage, “Rowdy” Roddy Piper, Ric Flair, and “The Heartbreak Kid” Shawn Michaels. Players will see a unique WWE-inspired garage as well, complete with in-ring introductions for the thanks and the ability to acquire unique visual flair to further customize their grappler-based killing machines.

World of Tanks’ console editions will get more than WWE swag in today’s Update 5.0. The long-awaited cross-play service begins, allowing both Xbox and PlayStation officers to head out on the battlefield together for the first time. In addition, the popular RTS-inspired Commander mode has returned, adding some variety to the proceedings and allowing players to get a new view on the action. All of this comes along with the SummerSlam-themed battle pass, which will be available until Monday, September 21.

Every time WWE partners with a game like World of Tanks, it feels more surprising than it should. Even outside of their own interests, WWE has been hands-on with creating interesting experiences for its fans in the gaming realm. With those patently ridiculous experiments under their belt, watching an Andre The Giant-themed tank gesticulate inside a wrestling ring while pyro explodes behind it almost feels normal.
