WWE Undertaker Had the Perfect Solution for the Montreal Screwjob

The end of Bret Hart’s WWF (now WWE) career before moving to WCW has been one of wrestling’s most controversial topics. Hart’s contract was set to expire at 1997’s Survivor Series, and the Canadian wrestler was heading to the WCW. The events that ensued came to be known as the Montreal Screwjob, as Vince McMahon took the WWF Championship off Hart in a laughable submission angle and gave it to Shawn Michaels. The move angered Hart so much that he socked McMahon in the locker room after and a very public spat resulted.

Since then, many interviews and documentaries, like Dark Side of the Ring, have done a lot of work dissecting the event. Now, with Undertaker doing more interviews with his own docuseries, The Last Ride, making the rounds, the Dead Man has revealed he had a solution for this PR disaster.

Undertaker’s work as Mark Callaway behind the scenes has revealed that, not only is he an athlete and mentor, but one of McMahon’s right-hand men. Creatively, WWE leaned on Undertaker, and he had both the trust of McMahon and the entire locker room.

In an interview with ESPN, he admits he was pissed off by the way McMahon handled the Montreal Screwjob, and that on the night of, he was asked to go watch the match from the boss’ office. It seems creative didn’t want him around them as they plotted Hart’s downfall; something that confused people and left them wondering if it was part of the script. As the night progressed Michaels locked Hart in the latter’s signature Sharpshooter and McMahon quickly got the bell rung, despite the Hitman not tapping, ensuring he’d go off to WCW without remaining champ. It’s all because Hart didn’t want to drop the belt to Michaels, whom he personally disliked. But according to Undertaker, McMahon had an easier solution, and should have used him, swapping HBK out.

“I was pissed about the whole thing because I felt like I possibly could have been used to get what we need,” he said. “Bret would have dropped it to me, and I could have dropped it to Shawn right after that. There was a different way to do it, but Vince had to cover his bases.” That would have made sense, because the Dead Man and Hart were close, popular and Undertaker (who also had issues with HBK’s arrogant attitude) would have gladly done what was best for business by losing the title. But it seems McMahon wanted to rub it in Hart’s face and give his biggest enemy a chance to steal the spotlight.

Undertaker’s solution came the night after when he spoke with his boss, angry that his friend got screwed over so publicly. But again, he was seemingly kept in the dark beforehand and assumed McMahon and the two wrestlers sorted the situation out. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case, and the event led to a rift between Hart and the WWE that lasted until the wrestler was inducted into the Hall of Fame.

It’d have been a proper farewell too because both athletes were in their prime, they enjoyed competing with and against each other, and it’d have saved McMahon from a lot of drama. The fight with Undertaker was the honorable match to make, and McMahon could have faked an injury for HBK. Sadly, egos got the better of everyone, and the only person who had none, Undertaker, had no idea the problem would be exacerbated so much between his colleagues.
