Warning: contains spoilers for Inferno #2!

The X-Men have finally pulled off their own version of Game of Thrones – for better and for worse. Jonathan Hickman’s soft reboot of the X-Men property at Marvel has seen plenty of changes come to the world of mutants, including an island home of their own, Professor X and Magneto working together, and the entirety of mutant-kind putting aside their differences for the betterment of the species (at least for the most part). But in Inferno #2, written by Jonathan Hickman with art by Stefano Caselli and colors by David Curiel, cracks begin to form in the once-unbreakable facade – as Mystique plays every mutant against each other.

When once all mutants were forced to live under human rule, subject to persecution and unfair treatment, the reboot centers around the mutant island of Krakoa, a place in which all mutants are welcome (and humans can only journey if they’re invited, which is quite rare). Complicating matters is the revelation that Moira MacTaggart is not a human ally, but a mutant with a very unique power: whenever she dies, she is reborn on her original birthday with all her memories. The mutant Destiny poses a terrible threat to Moira, and mustn’t earn a seat on the mutant council – but Mystique has other ideas.

After Destiny’s resurrection, a vote is taken to allow her a seat on the Quiet Council. During the vote, the issue flashes back to Mystique talking to the members whom she deems pliable. For Exodus, she appeals to his sense of religious fervor and talks of Destiny as a prophet (which in a sense, she is) who would guide Krakoa onward. She secures Mister Sinister’s vote after telling him the others want him to vote no. For Sebastian Shaw, she “…knows for a fact that Emma’s going to vote against it” – and for Emma Frost, Mystique outright buys her vote with an unknown object. Ultimately, the votes are in favor for Destiny, much to the consternation of Professor X and Magneto.

Mystique knows exactly how to win the favor of every member of the council – and how to play them against each other. She can’t hope to win in a fight against the likes of Exodus, Sinister and Shaw, so she defeats them through wits instead. This closely mirrors Tyrion Lannister’s early machinations in the first few seasons of Game of Thrones, outwitting his opponents when he was unable to outfight them.

In addition, the political games of the show are mirrored with the X-Men’s Quiet Council. Though these mutants profess to work together, most are truly in it for themselves (or at least have very different ideas about what is best for Krakoa and all mutantkind. While Mystique ultimately wins during this battle of wits among the X-Men, it remains to be seen if another mutant will play the Game of Thrones better than her – and perhaps a confrontation in the future can’t be solved through diplomacy alone.
