Yellowjackets Is Adam Secretly An Adult Javi Theory Explained

Who is Adam on Yellowjackets, and could he be an adult Javi? Very little is known about the mysterious character so far, prompting speculation: is it possible that Adam is secretly Javi Martinez from the plane crash, now all grown up? Yellowjackets tells the story of a high school girls soccer team whose plane crashed in the Ontario wilderness on their way to the National Championship. It alternates between 1996, when the accident happened, and the present when remnants from the past return to haunt the remaining survivors.

In the present day, a seemingly random fender-bender leads former Yellowjacket Shauna (Melanie Lynskey) to meet Adam (Peter Gadiot), an attractive younger man who quickly takes an interest in her. Either Adam likes a challenge, or he has an agenda – like most of the outsiders circling the survivors do. Though Shauna and Adam begin a reckless affair, she does not tell him about the plane crash, even as he teasingly (but continuously) needles her for information about herself.

How much does Adam already know, and what does he want from Shauna? Their first few meetings were made up of a series of strange coincidences that could easily have been deliberately set up; is he really a stranger, or could he be someone important from the past? There were only three men that survived the plane crash: Travis, Javi, and Coach Scott. Recent episodes have revealed that Travis is dead, and it’s unlikely that Coach Scott made it out of the forest alive given his amputated leg and Misty’s twisted, smothering fixation on him. However, the fate of Travis’ little brother, Javi, is still unknown. That means it’s possible he could show up again in the present – if he hasn’t already. Since Travis survived, it stands to reason that the protective, temperamental teen would make sure his brother did, too. Could the younger man who’s so doggedly pursuing Shauna be a grown-up Javi?

In Yellowjackets episode 4, “Bear Down,” a young Shauna strays from the group to go write in her journal. When Javi finds her, she explains that writing helps her process. Sensing his curiosity and grief, she rips out a page and gives it to him. It’s a kind gesture that seems to signal a meaningful moment of connection. It was also something that may have meant more to Javi than it did to Shauna, perhaps prompting a love that has lasted to this day. This would certainly explain Adam’s apparently immediate and inexplicable fascination with the frankly frightening Shauna of the present.

Though it’s a bit hard to believe that Shauna wouldn’t recognize Javi, it is still a possibility. After all, it has been 25 years since the plane crash, and unlike the others, Javi was still in his more formative years at the time of the event. He himself may have even been surprised at Shauna’s lack of recognition, causing Javi to adopt the random persona of Adam so that he could finally have a chance with the girl of his dreams without being seen as the kid brother from the plane crash.

It would be especially possible that Shauna would fail to recognize Javi if she thought that he had died in the wilderness, maybe even as a result of something she did. If so, Javi could be posing as Adam for reasons more sinister than youthful infatuation: perhaps he’s seeking revenge. He might be the mysterious, unknown figure who sent out the threatening postcards and murdered Travis. That would suggest an end goal of killing all the survivors – with Shauna being the next in line. It remains to be seen which of the survivors will be able to survive this new reckoning in Yellowjackets.
