The Great British Bake Off Season 10 The 10 Best Bakers Ranked

The Great British Bake Off may be great comfort TV, but the bakers who step into the tent are anything but comfortable, because the challenge is grueling and quite brutal, and contestants can get booted out for a very minor faux pas, like not using real chocolate or glazing a fig roll wrong. But that makes sense, because why else would the GBBO be such an esteemed competition?

Season 10 was by far one of the most interesting seasons for the show, not only did it feature hugely competent bakers who were extremely versatile, but they also introduced some new-age styling techniques and culinary practices which gave a real glimpse into the high-stakes world of modern baking. Though health advisor David Atherton won the season, here’s the definitive ranking of the best bakers on the show.

10 Jamie

The young part-time waiter won a lot of hearts with his boyish charm. But since he was just 22, fans unanimously agreed that despite being a competent baker, he simply needed a lot more experience. To be fair, Jamie, who was eliminated on biscuit day, had a really daunting challenge at hand.

For the technical challenge round, bakers had to ace 12 identical fig rolls in 1½ hours, and for the showstopper, the bakers had to create a 3D biscuit sculpture in 4 hours! Interestingly, Jamie proved that he works well with tricky garnish, be it fondant or cream toppings, but he made some pretty amateurish mistakes which established him as a rookie (like the time he forgot to add eggs to his cake batter or putting egg glaze on fig rolls).

9 Amelia

The sportswear designer shocked her fellow bakers when she confessed that she hated cheese, which is of course, quite an issue in a baking contest. But Amelia was sent home after a challenge that required the bakers to prove their mettle with yeast and artisanal bread-making.

They had to make a platter-style Tear & Share loaf in 3 hours, along with 8 burger baps and 4 veggie burgers to go inside half of them. Amelia made a chorizo tear and share that didn’t exactly go according to her plan. But she revealed after her elimination that she’s not shocked that she was asked to leave on bread week, since she has never been very technically proficient with bread-making.

8 Helena

The professional poker player and part-time jewelry designer Helena also had an unusual stint in What We Do In The Shadows. She was definitely one of the most intriguing bakers of the season, who came up with edgy, gothic themed desserts and macabre styling which was appreciated by the judges.

But fans have noted that unlike some of her fellow participants, Helena’s baking was not all about the fancy frosting or the heavy garnish, but she in fact, believed in getting the basics right. Even when she prepared a cake that’s over-the-top, she made sure she got the fundamental elements right. Like when she made her fairy garden cake, she blew the judges away with her chocolate and coffee sponge base, which is quite an accomplishment considering the amount of time she had to spend on the decoration.

7 Rosie

Rosie has had some bad days on the show, but no one can refute the fact that she was perhaps one of the most unyielding bakers who knew how to turn a culinary disaster in her favor. She was eliminated in the semi-final and she was quite sad that she couldn’t make it to the finals after putting up such a tough fight.

In the semi-final Rosie had to make a domed tart and had troubles with the pastry for her St. Honore gateau, and she couldn’t manage her time in a streamlined way. Rosie was an exceptionally astute baker, however when it came to elaborate, step-by-step preparations she wasn’t the best at planning and scheduling her tasks, which is very crucial for any culinary challenge.

6 Michelle

Michelle was definitely one of the most technically sound bakers on the show, but proved to be somewhat out of her depth with experimental baking. GBBO’s tasks are usually designed to weed out bakers who are not equally adept at old school and avant garde techniques.

While Michelle did amazingly well with homely traditional bakes like Welsh bara brith (which is a type of tea cake), fruity Bakewells, and buttermilk cake, she struggled with some new-age and exotic styling like the Indian rice pudding mishti or textured crème brûlée pie with edible flowers which simply had too much going on.

5 Michael

The Millennial Michael was a really unpredictable baker. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but it made it very hard for the judges and viewers to gauge his strengths and weaknesses. He would at times mess up some very easy, DIY-friendly bakes and do exceptionally well with complicated flavor profiles, which is quite unlikely if one is not a great baker.

For instance, on bread week, which managed to hassle even some of the best bakers on the show, Michael’s Keralan Star tear and share bread and his Mediterranean campfire scored bread won big with the judges. However his Beignet soufflé and sour lemon cake with raspberry cheesecake swirl, which are relatively easy bakes, were blasted by the judges. But fans have noticed that Michael thrives when there’s a real challenge involved, because he’s a big risk-taker.

4 Henry

The 20-year-old Henry was a technical marvel and his forte was simple, elegant dessert styling. He also picked textures and flavor combinations which are not too overwhelming or clumsy, which worked in his favor.

Fans were quite outraged after he was booted out of the show for his messy chandelier pie tower, and really wanted the judges to give him another chance, especially because he proved himself again and again, and in fact his towering meringue cake was such a success. Henry was notably a genius at curating a dessert and working around its focus, like his Lemon and Lime Sarawak layer cake held together with raspberry and mint jam.

3 Alice

The Great British Bake Off Season 10 The 10 Best Bakers Ranked

The first runner-up, Alice’s specialty was putting interesting contemporary spins on traditional and old school desserts. As easy as it sounds, it’s obviously very tricky, because this entails curating an untested flavor and consistency profile that could end up going wrong. Her simplistic and rather posh tiramisu bombe, for instance, was indulgent and was hailed as ‘a triumph.’

Her British Afternoon Tea inspired Koya carrot cake again utilized new-age, trendy blends of flavors with old school formats and won over the judges. Her piña colada cake with caramelized rum pineapple filling succeeded for the same reason.

2 Steph

The Great British Bake Off Season 10 The 10 Best Bakers Ranked

Steph was a perfectionist and she had fresh ideas, which is why she made it to the top three, since the show values originality very highly . A key reason behind her success is that she’s an effortless baker who never bites off more than she can chew, and this also helps her in her quest in producing neatly designed cakes.

Fans have noted that though Steph was really imaginative her styling, she usually only stuck to 3-4 major ingredients, which made her bakes more aesthetically pleasing.

1 David

There’s a very simple reason as to why David was declared the winner of season 10 of GBBO. The health advisor simply believes in planning ahead and does not take unnecessary risk which can hurt him later. He established early on that he’s a genius with time management, and he only got better as he acquired more experience on the show, and his technical prowess was praised by judges and fans.

David’s forte was eye-catching desserts that are not just showstopping, but had all the key elements right, like his classic vanilla custard pie with flapper girl biscuit toppings, which was audacious and yet followed a simple technique. Or his double-baked Stilton soufflé and his clever cheese board made with biscuits and fig rolls resembling sausages, which were brilliantly designed.
