Harry Potters 10 Worst Injuries Ranked

It might be magical, but the wizarding world is incredibly dangerous. Everybody is at risk in a world full of dark wizards, fantastic beasts, and dubiously careless school rules. However, nobody took more of a beating than the self-titled hero of the Harry Potter series himself.

As the Chosen One, Harry’s entire life is plagued with perils few other characters can imagine. Although he has a talent for escaping these situations (mostly) unscathed, he still picks up his fair share of injuries along the way.

10 Engraving “I Must Not Tell Lies” Into His Hand

In the eyes of some fans, Professor Umbridge is just as despicable as Lord Voldemort. Her attitude towards her students is sadistic, with her taking great joy in torturing them for no greater purpose other than her own entertainment. Her go-to method? Forcing them to write in a quill that draws ink from their own hands.

Harry is her favorite torture subject, forced to write “I must not tell lies” repeatedly as punishment for spreading the truth about Voldemort’s return. It’s completely horrifying – not only is Harry being shunned by most of Hogwarts, but he’s still struggling with the aftermath of watching Voldemort’s return. The fact the scar is visible for years to come is just another reminder of unfairly he was treated by his fellow wizards.

9 Malfoy Breaking His Nose

Most of Harry’s injuries are magic-related. However, when it comes to his rivalry with Draco Malfoy, both have a habit of seeing red and resorting to their most basic angry instincts, as seen when Malfoy breaks Harry’s nose in Half-Blood Prince.

Convinced that Malfoy is up to something, Harry sneaks into his compartment under cover of the Invisibility Cloak. Malfoy catches on and later sends everyone ahead so he can catch Harry alone and, freezing him with a body-bind curse, stomp on his nose. It’s nothing that can’t be fixed with magic, but it’s still pretty gruesome – not to mention painful.

8 Hungarian Horntail Slicing His Arm

The Triwizard Tournament is yet another wildly dangerous tradition Hogwarts seems to tolerate, and it’s a wonder Harry doesn’t sustain more injuries. His first comes from the deadly Hungarian Horntail in the First Task.

Thanks to his flying skills, he manages to evade serious damage. However, he still slices his shoulder on one of the dragon’s talons when he fails to swerve on time. Although it’s quite shallow and Madam Pomfrey fixes him in a matter of minutes, it’s still a nasty wound Harry never even signed up to receive.

7 Cracking His Skull Playing Quidditch

Harry Potters 10 Worst Injuries Ranked

Hogwarts isn’t particularly stringent about safety – if it was, Quidditch would have been banned centuries ago. Sending dozens of teenagers hundreds of feet into the air where they’re free to be bludgeoned with high-speed balls, bats, and even their competitors is a recipe for disaster. Harry being Harry, he falls victim to all of the above.

One of his worst injuries comes courtesy of mildly villainous Gryffindor, Cormac McLaggen. Arrogant, boisterous, and far less talented than he believes, he accidentally cracks Harry’s skull with a bludger when trying to correct a teammate. Luckily, Harry’s caught by two other players, but still winds up unconscious and bedridden in the Hospital Wing. Considering it’s one of his many head injuries throughout the series, he’s lucky he didn’t sustain worse damage.

6 Falling Off His Broom

Another serious Quidditch incident sees Harry fall off his broom. The average person couldn’t be expected to sit on a thin strip of wood in the sky for hours at a time without this happening at least once, but Harry is constantly cited as one of the best players Hogwarts has ever seen, making this completely out of character.

In his defense, it’s not for lack of talent. Dementors are responsible for the incident, catching him off guard in a game already hampered by thunder and lightning. Thankfully, Dumbledore manages to slow him down before he hits the ground, but he still falls hundreds of feet and has to spend an entire weekend in the hospital. Yet another lucky escape for the Chosen One.

5 Nagini’s Bite

Despite being a Parseltongue, Harry is unable to charm Nagini, Voldemort’s loyal snake. That’s why when she is unveiled as Bertha Jorkins in disguise in Deathly Hallows, there’s nothing he can do to stop her lashing out and biting him.

It’s nowhere near as severe as it could have been – unlike Arthur Weasley, Harry isn’t injected with venom, and Hermione is on hand to apply Essence of Dittany. The context of the injury makes it more horrifying than anything, with Nagini emerging from Bertha’s body ranking as one of the most disturbing moments in all of Harry Potter.

4 The Events Of The Third Task (And The Graveyard)

Harry’s experience in both the maze and the graveyard make the night of the Third Task one of the worst of his life. Back before he’s aware of Voldemort’s impending return, he is thrown into the air by an Acromantula (which is cut from the film) that pierces his leg with a pincer before being thrown to the ground.

Of course, his night progressively gets more traumatic when Wormtail slices his arm open for blood to restore Voldemort. He’s also subjected to the Cruciatus Curse. Severe though his wounds may be, Fawkes later heals them with phoenix tears. However, the emotional weight of this night rests on Harry forever.

3 Losing The Bones In His Arm

Even when Harry isn’t facing mortal peril, he still manages to encounter some truly horrifying injuries. During a Quidditch match in his second year, Harry’s arm is shattered by a rogue bludger. As if that’s not bad enough, the hapless Gilderoy Lockhart makes the situation worse by accidentally erasing the broken bones completely.

It isn’t one of Harry’s most menacing injuries, but it’s definitely one of his most severe. Even Madam Pomfrey can’t immediately fix it – instead, he spends a night regrowing each and every bone. It’s not just physically painful, it’s frustrating. As if Harry isn’t victim to enough pain, he has to fall victim to a buffoon like Lockhart, too.

2 Impaling Himself On A Basilisk Fang

Going into the Chamber of Secrets is one of Harry’s bravest moments. He’s small, skinny, and knows there’s a Basilisk waiting for him at the other end, yet he still races to save Ginny without a second thought.

With the Sword of Gryffindor and Fawkes on his side, he does an admirable job of killing the Basilisk. He still manages to sustain a serious injury though, accidentally impaling his arm on one of its extremely poisonous fangs. It’s ultimately healed by Fawkes, but he still comes closer to death than any 12-year-old should.

1 Being Cursed By Avada Kedavra

Ordinarily, the killing curse doesn’t leave any visible damage (aside from killing its victim, obviously). Harry is a special exception. Protected by his mother’s sacrifice, Voldemort’s spell rebounds and leaves Harry with a lightning-bolt scar on his forehead.

This alone is a pretty minor wound, but it’s the consequences that make this Harry’s worst injury. This scar plagues Harry with nightmares, visions, and agonizing pain for years after he re-enters the wizarding world. All is well in the end – it’s just a heavy burden for a teenager to bear.
