Yellowstone has plenty going on, whether it’s fighting for the Dutton land or family drama. The Dutton family is at the center of all that; Kayce and Beth may be brother and sister, but their relationships with their significant others vary greatly. Kayce and Monica share a son and love one another; Rip and Beth have a long, complicated history together and know everything about each other.

While both are memorable couples on the show, Kayce and Monica have more problems and subsequent fights than Rip and Beth; the latter couple make an effort to refrain from going to bed angry and work things out sooner rather than later. While each have their strengths and weaknesses, it can be hard to see who is the better couple overall.

They’ve Stayed Together Throughout Everything

Kayce and Monica’s relationship has never been easy; at one time or another, the two are always facing some kind of obstacle, whether it be trouble with the ranch, the two not being honest with one another, or the two disagreeing on topics ranging from their family life to their future. On several occasions, they’ve had difficult times and heated arguments, but they don’t hold that against one another, as they always find a way back to each other to fight their demons together.

Even When They Were Broken Up, They Maintained A Connection

For a time, Monica decided that she and Tate had to be away from Kayce, and moved into their own home when Monica got the job at Montana State University. Their separation was painful, but Monica felt that it was needed.

They argued, but on one important occasion, Kayce confessed that he didn’t know how to stop communicating with his wife, and that she was his best friend. She let him know that he was her best friend too; while they didn’t get back together right away, it did lead to them working things out so they could be a family again.

There’s Nothing They Wouldn’t Do For Their Son

Kayce and Monica may not be the best couple on Yellowstone, but they are great parents. They love their son Tate more than anything; when he was kidnapped, his parents were frantic and did everything they could to get him back safe and sound.

They love spending time with Tate and being there for him; Monica especially became protective of her son following the horrible experience of Tate having to kill someone to protect her when killers had broken into the Dutton home intending to harm them. The two do everything they can to support Tate and give him a good life.

They Don’t Force Each Other’s Families On One Another

Monica clearly struggles with Kevin Costner’s John Dutton, her father-in-law. She doesn’t agree with how he runs the ranch and believes the place where her husband grew up is far from good. Kayce maintains a relationship with both his wife and father, but doesn’t force them to be best friends on the show. Monica can be civil with Kayce’s family, but doesn’t go out of her way to spend time with them. Kayce is kind to Monica’s family; he doesn’t hold anything against them, which is a good thing as Monica’s brother killed his brother, and Kayce had to kill Monica’s brother in self-defense. Despite that kind of family history, the two get along with each other’s family, even if they’re not always one another’s favorite people.

They Listen To Each Other, Especially When They Need To Be Heard Most

When she and Kayce were separated, Monica began a brief affair with her physical therapist. Monica ended it when she and Kayce decided to give their marriage another try, and when Kayce let her know that he needed her, and didn’t know how to not be in her life. Kayce listened to Monica’s needs when he realized how traumatized she and Tate were following their experience of killers breaking into the Dutton household, and got her out of the house so she and Tate could heal, away from the origin of their trauma. Though they may not always get it right on the first try, Monica and Kayce listen to each other when they need it most.

Rip & Beth

They Were Friends First

Rip and Beth met when they were kids, at a time when the two needed a friend the most. Beth had just tragically lost her mother, and Rip had just lost his own family as well and had no one, hence John took him in.

They connected right away, and having each other helped them overcome their tragedies and move on with their lives. Having been friends first, much like Monica and Chandler on Friends, helped strengthen their connection overall, even if it took a while for the two to ultimately end up together.

They’re Always There For One Another

The two look out for one another in a way that no one else does for them. Recently in Season 4, Rip has been looking out for Beth when it comes to the young boy she has taken in. She’s currently furious with him for taking advantage of her, and Rip has taken on the task of teaching the boy to be a man and to win back Beth’s trust. Rip doesn’t like it when anyone messes with Beth, and ensures that if they do, they’ll learn a lesson, likely the hard way given Rip’s style. Likewise, Beth will fight tooth and nail for Rip, and audiences know it means war given Beth’s no-nonsense approach.

They Don’t Let Anything Come Between Them

Rip and Beth didn’t get to pursue their relationship right away, only getting to truly be together as adults. Now that they have each other, they don’t let anything get in their way, even each other. They’re completely honest with one another and don’t play games.

They know how precious time really is, especially given everything they’ve gone through in their lives; Rip nearly lost Beth to a bomb in the Season 3 finale, after all. Even on their worst days, they always come home and find comfort in one another.

They Make Time For One Another

Despite the many things that happen in their lives and careers, Rip and Beth never let it get in the way of their time together. They have dinner together and don’t go to bed angry.

They’ll spend time on the roof talking and looking at the stars, and they’ll find time to talk about anything and everything. They tease one another and laugh together. Ultimately, Rip and Beth make time for the little things, and it makes all the difference in maintaining and strengthening their relationship.

They Share A Deep Connection & Chemistry

Audiences know how passionate and loving Beth and Rip are when they’re alone together. It’s a big difference, considering the two are very different outside of closed doors. Beth is tough and doesn’t take anything from anybody; she would certainly scare even Michael Myers and Freddy Krueger. Elsewhere, Rip is the boss who isn’t afraid to resort to violence to get the job done. On their own, they can be frightening, but together, it’s as sweet as it gets, showing just how strong and special their connection as a couple really is, given they won’t let down their walls for anyone or anything else.
