You Season 4: Everyone Who Knows Joe’s Crimes (& Could Return)

Joe from You is pretty meticulous about covering up his crimes, but there are those who know his past misdeeds who could return for season 4.

Joe Goldberg from Netflix’s You was pretty careful when it comes to covering up his and Love’s crimes, but there are plenty of people Joe left behind who are aware of his transgressions and any of them could return for season 4. The thriller television series is incredibly popular among viewers and heralded by critics, receiving several award nominations. The series is so popular, in fact, that You season 4 was greenlit shortly before the season 3 premiere. The show is based on a book series of the same name by author Caroline Kepnes, with each season following the novels in order. The third installment of the series, You Love Me, hit the shelves in April of 2021, and the author has promised there are more books to come.

The next season of You will likely move the Paris, following immediately from where the previous season left off. You season 3 ended with a shocking twist leaving Love (Victoria Pedretti) presumably dead, Henry fostered out to Dante (Ben Mehl) and his husband, and Joe (Penn Badgely) having faked his own death in a fire, thus freeing him from any of the ramifications of his crimes. Joe flees to Paris, most likely to look for Marienne (Tati Gabrielle) and her daughter. Outside of that, it’s unclear to most audience members what will happen to Joe next. Fans of the novels can make some assumptions about season 4, as the books cover more of the story after Joe goes to Paris; however, a lot of information has been changed from the original source material, making it impossible to tell what will make the cut and what won’t.

Despite the incredible lengths the villain Joe went to in order to maintain his facade of innocence, there were actually quite a few loose ends that the killer left behind. Joe left a trail of witnesses and people who knew at least somewhat about his nefarious activities all the way back from season 1. Even though Joe faked his own death, there’s a number of people that would gladly hunt Joe down a continent away if they were to find out that Joe is actually alive. So who does know about Joe’s crimes? More importantly, what would happen if they were to return?

Matthew

This calculated antagonist came the closest to ruining Joe and Love’s violent legacy. Matthew Engler (Scott Speedman) is Joe’s rich tech-CEO neighbor in season 3. Matthew’s wife Natalie (Michaela McManus) had a minor tryst with Joe, and when Love founds out, she impulsively killed her competition. Matthew subsequently barred himself in his home and used a combination of traffic cams, security footage, and doorbell cameras to try and piece together exactly what happened to his late wife. While Matthew didn’t find out anything concrete, the evidence the cameras provide is condemning enough for Matthew to rightfully suspect Joe and Love’s involvement in his wife’s death. Going into You season 4, Matthew is one of the biggest threats to outing Joe for his subsequent crimes, and based on the determination (and vast resources) with which he tried to hunt down his wife’s killer, Matthew is likely to track Joe down.

Theo

In You, Theo (Dylan Arnold), Matthews’s son, also has compelling evidence against Joe. Love attempted to kill Theo after he discovered Cary and Sherry Conrad locked in the basement of Love’s bakery. Joe once again made an effort to clean up his wife’s mess and decided to dispose of Theo’s body before taking off. Surprisingly, Joe found Theo alive. At first, Theo believed that Joe came back to finish the job as retribution for sleeping with Love. In a shocking twist of events, Joe kept Theo alive and even took him to a hospital to recover from his injuries. Despite the fact that Joe did Theo a favor, the young man is now aware of Joe’s misdemeanors. Joe was able to put a lot of the blame on Love, but if Theo were to come back in vengeance for his stepmother’s death, the first person he would look for is Joe.

Ross The Private Investigator

You season 1 had a lot of moving parts to keep track of, including Peach Salinger’s (Shay Mitchell) subplot. The Salinger family had hired a Private Investigator named Ross to look into Peach’s supposed suicide. The P.I. cornered Joe on the street to ask him some questions, then informed him that evidence was found in Peach’s home containing DNA. Joe panicked, knowing that he had used a jar to relieve himself while waiting hidden in Peach’s house. Nothing came of the DNA testing from season 1, and it is possible that the case went cold after Joe changed his identity and moved to the west coast. However, if the P.I. were to find out Joe is alive and well in Paris, there’s no question that the Salinger family would use their abundant wealth to find their daughter’s killer.

Dr. Chandra The Marriage Therapist

You season 3 featured the minor character of Dr. Chandra (Ayelet Zurer) as Love and Joe’s marriage therapist. While the therapist was never let in on any real information about the couple’s crimes, she did make a chilling remark about the two when she said, “You are many things, but you are not murderers.” If Dr. Chandra is any good at her job, she would be able to piece together that something isn’t right with Joe, which would make this seemingly innocuous comment suddenly forboding. As well, if Dr. Chandra were to find out that Joe is not, in fact, dead she might find it in her best interest to track him down for further study.

Marienne

Though Netflix hasn’t released an official cast list for the next season, Marienne is likely to return for You season 4. Marienne found out about Joe’s murders from Love when Love confronted her about her affair with Joe. Love confessed that Joe killed Marienne’s ex-husband. Consequently, Marienne believed that Love was in an abusive relationship and urged her to leave Joe, before running to Paris with her daughter. Marienne and Joe will inevitably run into each other in the show’s future, and viewers are waiting with bated breath to see what will happen when Joe encounters the woman he loves (for now) — who knows all about his violent tendencies.

Dr. Nicky

In season 1, Beck (Elizabeth Lail) decided to go to therapy and ended up having an affair with her therapist. Dr. Nicky (John Stamos) promised Beck that he would leave his wife and children for her and bought her plenty of lavish gifts. Beck soon discovered that his gifts were just as empty as his promises and left him for Joe. When Joe found out that Dr. Nicky and Beck had an affair, he framed Dr. Nicky for Beck’s murder out of pure spite by burying her body in Dr. Nicky’s backyard. Though the therapist is imprisoned for Joe’s crimes, Dr. Nicky knows what Joe did. If he gets out of prison, while unlikely, he could decide to go after Joe in season 4.

Ellie

Ellie Alves (Jenna Ortega) was absent in You season 3; the season 2 recurring character fled after Joe told her about her older sister’s death. Joe fulfilled his promise of sending her money throughout season 3, though it is unclear if this will stop after he faked his own death. Ellie isn’t aware of the true extent of Joe’s conduct, but she has a pretty good idea. The two left off on ugly terms, and if Joe stops sending Ellie money, it’s not so far-fetched to say that the savvy teen might go looking for him.

Detective Fincher

Detective David Fincher (Danny Vasquez) suspected Joe of foul play after Henderson (Chris D’Elia) was found dead in his home. In this subplot of You season 2, Fincher was in love with Delilah (Carla Zumbado), Ellie’s sister, and because of Fincher’s suspicions, Delilah did her own investigation on Joe. Eventually, Delilah is led to Joe’s trusty old glass box and is later killed by Love. Detective Fincher ended up shooting and killing Forty after witnessing Forty’s attempt to kill Joe. Just because Joe moved away doesn’t mean Fincher forgot about his misgivings, however. If Fincher were to return, it could lead to complications for Joe with law enforcement in particular.

The Conrads

Sherry and Cary Conrad started out as the most obnoxious couple in You season 3, but the two eventually won favor with audiences after they fought for their lives to escape from Joe’s glass box. While actress Shalita Grant was disappointed by Sherry’s survival, many viewers felt differently. The Conrads pose a similar threat to Matthew Engler, as they know the full breadth of Joe’s crimes within Madre Linda. After Love’s death, the couple capitalized on their horrific experience by creating an extreme form of couples therapy based on their time in Joe and Love’s makeshift cage. The Conrads wield a lot of power as influencers and could seriously blow Joe’s cover if they were to find out the truth about the fire.

With all of the conjecture about the plot of You season 4 viewers are keen to find out who Joe will follow next, and in turn who will follow Joe. With Henry gone and Love dead, it’s assumed in Joe’s mind that he’ll be able to start over in Paris with few consequences. However, Joe left more loose ends than the character is probably aware of. While the Conrads, Matthew, Theo, and Ellie are the most viable options as to who could confront Joe in season 4, the series has surprised audiences before.
