When The Big Bang Theory’s Sheldon Cooper was slated to receive a prequel series focusing on the idiosyncrasies of his life as a boy genius, not everyone behind the scenes was initially fond of the name Young Sheldon for the project.

Young Sheldon showrunner Steven Molaro and television mega-producer Chuck Lorre recently revisited the prequel’s origins with The Hollywood Reporter. When asked whether the two ever had any disagreements during their tenure working on The Big Bang Theory and Young Sheldon, Molaro said, “It’s kind of funny to me: [Lorre] knows very well I did not love the title, Young Sheldon.”

Molaro further contextualized that he and Lorre have never had any true fights over the course of their creative partnership. If the two producers reached an impasse on a creative decision, the person with more passion for a specific choice usually won out. This implies Lorre was enthusiastic enough to trump Molaro’s initial disinterest in the title Young Sheldon.

According to Molaro, he and Lorre’s initial disagreement about the show’s title is still a subject over which the two creators can share a laugh. The showrunner made no indication toward an alternative title for the spinoff that may have been floated around prior to committing to Young Sheldon. Molaro still seems to retain a matter-of-fact attitude about the show’s eventual title, saying, “Here we are five years later. It wasn’t a loss.” Molaro also commented on the sitcom’s name going in a different direction than he had originally hoped. “It’s here, it is what it is,” he said.

The spinoff’s simple, albeit on-the-nose, title proved successful enough that other networks attempted to replicate its format. NBC’s Young Rock, now on its second season, found success with a similar premise and naming convention as Young Sheldon — casting a beloved pop culture figure at the center of a more traditional family sitcom and coming-of-age story.

In its fifth network season, Young Sheldon is about to reach its 100th episode milestone. The show has continued the gangbuster success of its predecessor, attracting millions of households per episode. Perhaps an ounce of this success is owed to the show’s direct name or simply the lasting impact of Jim Parsons’ breakout Big Bang Theory character.

Viewers can tune in to CBS on Thursday, March 31 to watch Young Sheldon’s 100th episode, “A Solo Peanut, a Social Butterfly and the Truth.” The series stars Iain Armitage, Zoe Perry, and Lance Barber, with Parsons providing the narration as an adult Sheldon Cooper.
