Young Sheldon Repeats Its Big Bang Theory Crossover Trick

Young Sheldon season 5 subtly repeats its The Big Bang Theory crossover trick. Despite existing in the same reality, the sitcoms’ respective narratives were largely separated. But, when it was announced that The Big Bang Theory was ending in 2019 after 12 seasons, CBS made a last-ditch effort to strengthen its connection to Young Sheldon. This resulted in a one-time crossover event. Knowing full well of The Big Bang Theory’s popularity, it was the network’s first attempt at setting up its prequel to become its next premier comedy. But given the fact that the events of Young Sheldon take place decades before its parent series, many wondered how could this be achieved.

Ultimately, CBS went a non-traditional route for the crossover. Instead of seeing characters from the period show actually visiting Pasadena, the involvement of George Cooper Sr. (Lance Barber) and Georgie (Montana Jordan) happened through their appearance in an old home video in adult Sheldon’s (Jim Parsons) storage. This came just in time as his dad’s rousing speech in an effort to rally his football team was exactly what Sheldon needed to push forward with his goal to win the Nobel Prize in Physics. Surprisingly, The Big Bang Theory and Young Sheldon crossover worked; it was emotional and it didn’t feel forced. While it has never been repeated due to the lack of opportunities to execute another one, its storytelling trick has recently been repeated in the spin-off

In Young Sheldon season 5, episode 5 titled “Stuffed Animals and A Sweet Southern Syzygy,” Sheldon (Iain Armitage) once again faced a tough decision in the name of science. While working closely with Dr. Linkletter (Ed Begley Jr.), they encountered a hurdle that got them stuck in answering a Physics equation. Sheldon knew Dr. Sturgis (Wallace Shawn), who’s working at a supermarket, could help them, but Dr, Linkletter was against the idea. Still hung up on his academic problem, Sheldon wanted to ask his mother for some insight, but since she was out of town, his father offered his two cents instead. George said that in the end, they are all for Team Science; in football, one doesn’t pass to their favorite person but the most capable one that could lead them to win. This motivated Sheldon to reach out to Dr. Sturgis, who, lo and behold, was able to solve his and Dr. Linkletter’s issue. George’s advice is reminiscent of his inadvertent encouragement of Sheldon in The Big Bang Theory crossover, wherein he also used a sports analogy to get his message across.

In the same Young Sheldon season 5 episode, Sheldon admitted that while his dad wasn’t perfect, he and his siblings weren’t great kids either. While he usually gives George a difficult time, on this occasion it was Missy (Raegan Revord) who crossed the line after she learned that her dad inadvertently caused Billy Sparks (Wyatt McClure) to confess his crush for her. Unlike Sheldon and his mother, Missy never badmouthed the Cooper patriarch in The Big Bang Theory, hinting that they had a better relationship. But considering what’s happening in Young Sheldon now, it’s possible that they, too, had a falling out, just like what happened with George and Sheldon. In any case, it’s clear that Young Sheldon is reconciling its version of George with that of its parent series through its narration. It’s unclear how far into the future adult Sheldon is. However, it’s likely that between seeing his dad’s videotape in The Big Bang Theory crossover and his recent musings of his childhood, he is slowly realizing that his harsh criticisms about George were unfair.

From the get-go, Young Sheldon’s depiction of George has been different from The Big Bang Theory’s. But, ultimately, CBS has to decide on the definitive version of the character. If it sticks to the prequel’s flawed-but-dedicated-family-man iteration, it’s possible that the spin-off also finds a way to evade tackling his controversial cheating narrative.
