YuGiOh! Ranking The Original Seriess Arcs

The original Yu-Gi-Oh! anime had quite a few arcs throughout its five-season run. It actually had a few more than the original manga did, as the series took pretty liberal advantage of filler arcs throughout. Some of those filler arcs are a ton of fun, and others are a bit iffier.

All-in-all, each arc had something that made it special, but they all had their weak spots, too. Season one in particular had quite a few mini-arcs following Duelist Kingdom and leading into the Battle City arc that aren’t exactly spectacular.

7 Season One’s Mini Arcs

These small arcs are the weakest of the Yu-Gi-Oh! arcs, though they all only run a few episodes, not long enough to be offensive in any way. The first of these arcs is Rebecca’s duel with Yugi, which sort of just sets her up for future appearances and doesn’t do much else of note.

Then there’s the first time the gang enters a virtual world, which is a cute little side romp. Finally, there’s Yugi taking on Duke Devlin in a game of Dungeon Dice Monsters, which is also a fun time. These arcs aren’t exactly bad, but they’re not super great or anything.

6 Waking The Dragons

Waking the Dragons is an okay arc with a fine premise, but its biggest downfall is that it goes on for way too long, which makes it an absolute slog to get through. Had this been a 13-20 episode arc, it would have been super strong. Instead, it is 40 grueling episodes.

Its duels are fine, but the plot absolutely drags. Nothing moves with any sort of urgency at all. Once things start to heat up toward the end of the arc, however, things do get interesting, but by the time that viewers get there, they’ve been watching this arc for hours upon hours upon hours. It just needed to be a shorter arc, that alone would have saved it.

5 KC Grand Championship

The KC Grand Championship did what Waking the Dragons should have. In this one, the duels are fun, the plot keeps moving (even throwing in a few surprises), and everything is tight.

It doesn’t drag itself out being far too long. It is just the right length. It’s a fun little tournament that doesn’t distract too heavily from the main arcs of the show. When it comes to a distraction, however…

4 Virtual World

The Virtual World arc literally arrives smack in the middle of an arc and absolutely derails it, turning it into something else entirely. However, when it comes to the various fillers arcs throughout the show’s run, the Virtual World is the best of them all.

It provides the Kaiba brothers some backstory, forces even the non-duelists of the series to fight for their lives, and generally moves at a fast enough pace. Just like the other filler arcs, it isn’t entirely needed, that’s why it’s filler. However, it’s still a fun arc to watch and provides some solid entertainment.

3 Duelist Kingdom

The first arc of the show, Duelist Kingdom, has a lot riding on it. It has to establish the characters, set up stakes, and basically invent an entire new card game. It does all of this well.

Pegasus is an imposing villain, and his eliminators give the gang a pretty tough challenge as they slowly make their way to the castle. They make some friends along the way like Mai Valentine, and Yugi’s duel with Kaiba is one for the books. This arc had a lot going for it. It takes all of its potential and uses it, making for a great arc.

2 Dawn Of The Duel

After being a minor side villain through the rest of the canon arcs of the series, the Spirit of the Ring comes out in full force in Dawn of the Duel and faces off with Pharaoh Atem in a battle of epic proportions. Despite not actually featuring almost any dueling, this arc is fantastic. It’s a massive battle over the fate of Egypt that is constantly in flux.

Plus, this arc also leads into the mini Ceremonial Battle arc, which itself is fantastic. Viewers learn the origins of Atem before they get to see his final send-off, and it’s a very satisfying conclusion.

1 Battle City

Battle City is full of absolutely epic duels, constant plot twists, insurmountable foes, and the Egyptian God cards. It’s a non-stop fight to the finish from the word go. Despite Marik not actually being a good duelist in any sense of the word, he’s a powerful foe that will stop at nothing to get what he wants.

As Kaiba, Marik, and Yugi all fight over control of the most powerful cards in the game, there can only be one winner, and none of them are going down without a fight. Home to several legendary duels and battles of epic proportions, Battle City does not disappoint as the best arc that the Yu-Gi-Oh! anime has to offer.
