It’s curious that in an introspective moment spent staring into the sea, Victor makes the comment that he never expected he’d leave St. Petersburg. Considering the globe-trotting lifestyle of his present, Victor must have felt constrained at some point in the past and been unable to visualize a future of such wild success.

8 The World Resists His Decision To Coach

It’s no secret that Victor’s modus operandi is surprising the world, so it’s logical to assume he must have been pleased with the shock and uproar his decision to coach Yuri caused (he certainly seems to enjoy the rise it gets out of others).

That being said, Victor’s choice is consistently met with jokes and disdain; rather than seriously considering Victor as a coach, many view his actions as a charade or pantomime. While this perspective is understandable and even justified at times, it also exhibits the trappings of success as seen in the skating world’s deep-rooted expectations of Victor.

7 His Affect Can Be Misguided And Too Forceful

A master of performance and evoking emotional responses, Victor possesses a true talent for manipulating the hearts of his audience. This same charisma is exuded off the ice, too, specifically when Victor is giving interviews or entertaining a crowd. In more personal situations, Victor’s proclivity for affectation can be ineffective or even damaging.

Simultaneously inexperienced with coaching and the fragility of Yuri, Victor threatens to resign if Yuri succumbs to his performance anxiety and misses the winner’s podium at the Cup of China. Victor’s real intention was motivation—he wasn’t seriously considering quitting—but the visceral pain it inflicted on Yuri showcased the potential danger an affected role could be to real emotions. It is sad that he does not know how to express himself without them.

While beloved and admired, Victor’s position at the top of the skating pantheon prompts a dizzying amount of competitive ambition in his peers. The intention of dethroning the king of a sport isn’t unique to Yuri!!! on Ice by any means, it’s practically an expected response, and the anime doesn’t particularly explore the pressure Victor might feel from this.

That being said, the show does emphasize the large number of characters who have been motivated by the Russian legend, and the concomitant of this inspiration is a desire to defeat Victor—nearly every skater’s internal monologue, at some point, focuses on a desire to surpass him.

5 His Dog Nearly Dies

Victor’s family history and childhood are never explored throughout the season, but his attachment to Makkachin, his pet poodle, is consistently highlighted. During Moscow’s Rostelecom Cup, Yuri’s final chance to qualify for the Grand Prix Final, Makkachin is hospitalized back in Japan after choking on meat buns.

Although worried about leaving Yuri coachless, and at Yuri’s own demand, Victor leaves Russia to be with his dog. Thankfully, both Makachin and Yuri pull through, and Victor is able to connect on an even deeper emotional level with Yuri once they are reunited.

4 He Neglected Life And Love

Maintaining his position at the top of the skating world left little time for Victor’s personal life. While ostensibly playful and charming, Victor’s extreme competitiveness and intense dedication to skating required a nearly superhuman level of focus and devotion to remain number one for over a decade.

Victor never seems to regret his decision to prioritize his vocation over his personal life, but his connection with Yuri seems to prompt an introspective examination. It’s implicit that through helping Yuri discover the inner-strength needed to compete, Victor discovered a new side of himself—perhaps a dimension separate from professional skating.

3 His Reinventions Made Him Feel Alone

Victor’s focus on the self, specifically its reinvention, as a means of surprising and winning over audiences led to a lonely quest for power. A combination of the subsequent isolation and continued dedication to improvement meant Victor’s trajectory wasn’t collaborative; yes, his coach, Yakov Feltsman, was integral to his development, but even Yakov often bemoaned Victor’s obstinance and claimed he never listened.

The inspiration for Victor’s seasonal evolutions came from within himself. As this was his method—one that proved effective over the course of his career—it’s reasonable to infer Yuri’s presence provided the type of stark contrast necessary to put Victor’s feelings of loneliness into perspective.

2 He Feared Losing Yuri Post Grand Prix Final

Carrying the burden of being the man that “stole” Victor from the world, an act Chris even equates to a “sin,” Yuri feels that he is slowly killing Victor-the-skater’s chance to return to competition by allowing himself the pleasure of Victor-the-coach. These feelings of guilt, mingled with the genuine desire to see Victor return to the rink, compel Yuri to suggest he and Victor go their own ways once the Grand Prix Final is over—effectively setting him free.

Victor is so upset and angry that he actually begins to cry; he chastizes Yuri’s selfishness, as Victor is doing exactly what he wants, a statement that practically quivers with romantic undertones.

1 He Didn’t Kiss A Gold Medal Won By Yuri

The rallying cry throughout Yuri!!! on Ice is that Victor has come to Yuri’s assistance in order for the latter to win a gold medal at the Grand Prix Final. At the onset, this goal seems more like a distant dream, especially due to Yuri’s lack of confidence. However, as Victor helps Yuri grow as a skater and a person, the gold medal seems more realistic and achievable.

Ultimately Yuri falls short, losing to Yuri “Yurio” Plisetsky. (0.12 to be exact), but it’s a bittersweet moment that encapsulates the anime’s motif of nourishing love—even though he was proud and happy, it must be pointed out that Victor refuses to kiss Yuri’s silver medal.
