Just a few months ago, director Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead premiered on Netflix and in select theaters, and now the filmmaker is already promoting its prequel. The poster for Army of Thieves was released by Snyder on Tuesday along with the confirmation that further details would be arriving at the Comic-Con @Home panel on July 25.

Army of Thieves is expected to arrive on the streaming service later this year and will focus on the story of the fan-favorite German safecracker Ludwig Dieter, with actor Matthias Schweighöfer returning to reprise his role. He will also be stepping into the director’s chair, with Snyder taking on the role of producer and story writer.

The official synopsis of Army of Thieves has been released and puts Dieter in another adventure, albeit with fewer zombies. He will be seen being recruited into a crew of “Interpol’s most wanted criminals,” who will be using their skills to get into several “impossible-to-crack safes across Europe.” Earlier this month, Snyder had shared some official stills from the Army of the Dead prequel, which put the crew in what seems like a stressful heist situation.

Fans who are expecting Army of Thieves to be similar to Snyder’s Army of the Dead will be disappointed as producer Deborah Snyder has confirmed it’ll be a “romantic comedy heist film.” It takes an entirely different tone and will not be set during a zombie apocalypse. Instead, it will offer fans a look into Dieter’s backstory, and while the undead will still be existing in the country, the characters may not necessarily have to deal with them directly.

Apart from Schweighöfer, Army of Thieves also stars Nathalie Emmanuel as Gwendoline, Ruby O. Fee as Korina, Guz Khan as Rolph, Jonathan Cohen as Delacroix, and Stuart Martin as Brad Cage. Army of the Dead is still streaming on Netflix and stars Dave Bautista as Scott Ward, who forms a team to go into Las Vegas for the heist of a lifetime. Fans have enough time to catch up on the film before the prequel arrives. Schweighöfer’s Dieter was last seen being locked inside the underground safe at the Las Vegas Strip with many fans wondering if his character survived the zombie attack, though it seemed pretty clear that he was devoured by the living dead.

Army of Thieves isn’t the only project from the franchise in the works. Netflix is also working on an anime spin-off series, Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas, which will be shedding light on Bautista’s Ward and the other members of his team and how they dealt with the initial outbreak in Sin City. Glimpses of that period were shown in the opening credits of Army of the Dead, but the anime series will be diving deep into the characters’ struggles.

Army of Thieves is currently in production at Netflix and is expected to release later this year.
