Zack Snyder’s Justice League Production Designer Praises The Batman’s Batmobile

The new Batmobile for Matt Reeves’ The Batman is receiving praise from the production designer of Zack Snyder’s Justice League. Despite whatever flaws those films may have had, it was always clear there was a lot of unique style and stunning visuals in every frame. It is a good sign for The Batman that people are already taking note of the fresh new direction for the character.

Appearing in Detective Comics for the first time in 1939, the Batmobile has changed a lot over the years. From its original plain red look to the souped-up muscle car of The Batman, the Batmobile has always managed to stay current and useful for whatever Batman needs at the time. Whether it looks more like a tank, a sports car, or a gothic missile, the signature visual element of the car has always been a Bat motif, usually with tailfins that resemble bat wings. Just about every iteration of Batman in pop culture has included a version of the Batmobile, which makes each new design all the more exciting for fans.

During a recent online panel from TheFilmJunkee, production designer Patrick Tatopoulos heaped praise upon the design of the new Batmobile in The Batman. Tatopoulos knows a thing or two about designing vehicles for the Dark Knight after his time working with Snyder on Justice League, where the Batmobile has a few prominent scenes. After throwing some shade at lesser Bat-vehicles from movies past, Tatopoulos shares his love for the new design, pointing out all the work that goes into designing a Batmobile that feels fresh and new. He said:

“I love it. I think it’s going to look fantastic…I like when everybody comes and just reinvents the wheel. And I think that new one is different, its unexpected, the first reactions were just like “Whoa, it’s just a muscle car.” But then you realize…I just love when someone brings something fresh and doesn’t float. And I think this was done…some of those other Batmobiles, and I think you know which ones I’m talking about. It felt like, “Just make the wings bigger, extend the thing, change the side.” It is not the way things should be designed. I think in a sense, Matt Reeves’ designer’s approach, is amazing. I am really loving the look of it.”

Tatopoulos is not wrong when he speaks of lazy designs for Batman’s car in the past. While Tim Burton’s original 1989 Batman (and its sequel Batman Returns) had a sleek, armored look to the Batmobile, the films that followed were not as inventive. Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy injected new life into the Batmobile, using a vehicle called “The Tumbler” as the Batmobile due to its tough nature combined with advanced agility. That agility could be used by Batman to take the car to places like the rooftops of Gotham City, which he did in Batman Begins.

Of course, it is hard to fully judge the new Batmobile at this point since the filmmakers have not released a lot of images of the final car. But those few shots helped set up an interesting take on Batman’s signature vehicle in The Batman. The “muscle car” of it all speaks to a different Batman as well, one who might just be able to step out of the shadow of all the Dark Knights who came before.
