Skull Kid from The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask may well succumb to the dark temptations of Majora’s Mask, but the temptation of the Majora’s Mask-themed Switch Lite designed by a Redditor has charmed Zelda fans on a whole other level. Majora’s Mask has long held the perception of being the black sheep of the Zelda franchise with its darker undertones and the atmosphere of inevitable doom and hopelessness lingering overhead Clock Town.

Gamers have speculated for several months now on the possibility of a Zelda 35th Anniversary collection for the Switch that will bring updated versions of Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask to HD. Since Nintendo’s E3 presentation, however, news of such a collection has not come out. Instead, Nintendo has focused on the HD version of Skyward Sword released last month, the Zelda Game & Watch, and the new trailer for the sequel to Breath of the Wild. While all of these have stirred up excitement among fans, they have not has as much of an impact on the community as rumors of porting Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask to the Switch.

User willierthanyou on Reddit posted front and back renderings of his Majora’s Mask Switch Lite, which he designed through Photoshop. The purple Switch features the outline of the titular mask on both the front and the back. On the front, two halves of Majora’s Mask situate on either side of the Switch, where orange Joy-Con sticks bug out in place of the mask’s normal red and yellow eyes. The buttons on the Switch also take from the mesmerizing, unsettling color palette of the mask. Meanwhile, the user has placed an image of the game’s title screen on the screen of the Switch: the original one from the N64 rather than the 3DS remake, where the Moon, unfortunately, hides behind the title card. For Zelda passion projects based around the moon, this menacing Zelda-themed aquarium has that covered.

Majora’s Mask’s legacy lives on in its mature themes of death, grief, and the feeling of utter hopelessness. Between the execution of these themes, the overall atmosphere of the game, and a robust side quest system full of memorable characters, it’s a remarkable feat that the developers of the game finished it in under a year. Producer Eiji Aonuma himself recognizes the Ocarina of Time sequel as the darkest in all of the Zelda series, which he has implied through his remarks about the upcoming Breath of the Wild sequel. At the time of the sequel’s reveal in 2019, Aonuma commented that the upcoming game would have distinctly darker tones than Majora’s Mask, implying that he views the N64 classic as the measuring stick for ‘dark’ Zelda games. Aonuma has clarified since then that Breath of the Wild 2 will not take direct inspiration from Majora’s Mask, but the promise remains that darker themes will take center stage in the sequel.

Fans clamoring for a switch themed after The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask may have to temper their expectations, or settle for custom decals created by a third party. But the spooky Photoshop render by Redditor willierthanyou makes for some awesome concept art of a cult-classic Zelda game. There are some seriously talented fans on Reddit making Switch skins of their favorite series. The same creator of the Majora’s Mask skin actually created another gorgeous Switch OLED skin of the Wind Waker. Given the talents of these fans, Nintendo might have a business opportunity on their hands to take inspiration and release decals or outright skins of these fan designs. A contest for the best Switch skin, where Nintendo licenses the winning designer’s skin, would make for an incredibly fun activity among Zelda artists and gamers in general.
