Zelda Theory Breath of The Wild 2 Is A Twilight Princess Sequel

The dark overtones of the Breath of the Wild 2 trailer has many fans drawing connections between the sequel and one of its predecessors, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. The eerie themes are not the only aspects which are stirring up this theory, as the BotW 2’s trailer reveals a few other interesting details that could connect the game to the series’ Child Timeline.

Twilight Princess follows the series’ hero, Link, as he embarks on a quest to save Hyrule from being destroyed by an alternate dimension known as the Twilight Realm. Link must transform between a wolf and Hylian form while being aided by a mysterious creature known as Midna. The protagonist must defeat Zant, the King of Twilight, before confronting Ganon and eventually killing him. The aforementioned characters all seem to have cameos in the Breath of the Wild 2 trailer, which could mean that the upcoming title might have some parallel to Twilight Princess.

One of the biggest points of comparison is the mummified corpse of what many speculate to be Ganon. The unknown body is wearing Gerudo style clothing, which is critical to Ganondorf’s history, as he is known for being the only male Gerudo to be born to the tribe in 100 years. Given that Ganon has taken on a Gerudo form in Twilight Princess, it can confidently be determined that at the very least, the mummy is Ganon. Furthermore, the headpiece the body is wearing is nearly identical to that which Ganon is seen with in Twilight Princess, with the most notable feature being the large yellow gem in the center. The trailer also depicts a large gash over the mummy’s chest from which Malice cascades from. The wound is located in the exact same place that Link impaled Twilight Princess’ Ganon at the finale of the game. Combining these details together makes the connections with Twilight Princess feel quite concrete.

The Twilight Realm Might Return In Breath of the Wild 2

The trailer also hints at the return of the Twili, a race of beings which inhabit the Twilight Realm. The beam of blue-green energy that if seen throughout the trailer has really only been seen in Twilight Princess, as the energy stems straight from the Twilight Realm. Twili are specifically the only beings known to have the ability to use this kind of magic. Given that the symbols seen in the energy also closely resemble the glyphs the Twili use, it’s possible the energy is directly cast by someone from the Twilight Realm. Some are theorizing the individual in question could be Zant, one of the main antagonists in Twilight Princess, especially since the reverse synth music in the trailer resembles his original boss music. Given how critical the relationship between Ganon and Zant is, it’s possible Zant plays a direct role in freeing the Demon King.

For Breath of the Wild 2 to have a connection to Twilight Princess, the two would need to exist in the same timeline. The Legend of Zelda is notorious for its complicated chronology that is seemingly changing every few months. Nintendo originally stated that BotW exists at the end of all the timelines and so it’s possible for it to act as a convergent point. If that’s not the case, evidence for Breath of the Wild 2 could place it somewhere along the Child Timeline, where it would have a direct lineage with Twilight Princess. Seeing as Zelda games are rarely released in chronological order, this could be a possibility.

Given Legend of Zelda’s deeply-rooted and complex in-game history, anything is possible, especially since fans are still debating whether BotW should exist at the end of the canon timelines. Breath of the Wild 2 may end up leading to the creation of a fourth separate timeline altogether, with how little we know at this time. However, there’s always a chance that the upcoming sequel may relate more to Twilight Princess than it does to the game that preceded it.
