Zeldas 35 Anniversary What Nintendo SHOULDNT Do

Nintendo’s 35th anniversary for the Super Mario series ended up feeling more like a corporate cash grab than a celebration of franchise history to most fans. As 2020 comes to a close, many Nintendo fans are hoping to see the company improve upon its structure for the heavily rumored 35th anniversary celebration of The Legend of Zelda franchise. Nintendo celebrated the 25th anniversary of the series with a 3D remake of Ocarina of Time and a brand-new title in the form of The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, so it’s more than fair to expect the studio to attempt the same next year after the huge success of Super Mario 3D All-Stars.

It’s no secret that Nintendo has found itself in hot water ever since it’s unfortunate involvement with the competitive Super Smash Bros. scene. The company has made multiple mistakes in a row, but it all seemed to start with the decision to release Super Mario 3D All-Stars as a limited-time release. This ended up having a huge negative impact on the availability of the title, since scalpers were charging approximately double the game’s retail value online, and it was an anti-consumer move which caught the media’s attention in a negative fashion. Super Mario 3D All-Stars reviewed and sold well, but some fans were set back by Nintendo’s marketing approach.

Many thought this was a one-time deal, but Nintendo has proven it is willing to implement the limited time offer on more titles as well, including Mario 35 and others. Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light is a rerelease of an NES game that never made its way across seas until now. Nintendo released the game in December of 2020, but the title will stop being sold at the end of March 2021. Because of this, it’s not farfetched to speculate Nintendo could implement the same tactic for Zelda’s 35th Anniversary.

How Limited-Release Titles Can Damage Nintendo’s Brand

As previously mentioned, Nintendo has received some troubling press as of late and limited-release products are anti-consumer by their very nature. It’s a process designed to limit the availability of a product in hopes that it will scare customers into impulse buying. It’s an effective method for making money short-term, but it can leave a bad taste in the mouths of those who were taken advantage of. Nintendo is in a position where it would benefit from amending its relations with its fans by avoiding the inevitable controversy surrounding a Zelda collection released in this manner.

Another major complaint many had with Super Mario 3D All-Stars is that each of the games included can be run better via emulation on PC. It’s clear when looking at Super Mario 64, which runs at 720p and 30 fps in the collection, that Nintendo didn’t put much effort into this product at all. The game runs Super Mario 64 and Sunshine in merely acceptable states, but Super Mario Galaxy 2, a title considered by many to be the best 3D Mario game, isn’t even included.

The scare caused by the limited-release status of the game was the main reason Super Mario 3D All-Stars performed so well, which means that a Zelda collection without that crutch would need to be of a much higher quality. Each of the mainline titles would need to be accounted for, and they would each need to run in a well-optimized format, of which the Switch is absolutely capable of doing. Keeping this from being a limited-time release would also prevent scalpers from capitalizing on the poor decision making of a major video game studio. Nintendo has an opportunity to amend its wrongs during 2020 with The Legend of Zelda’s 35th anniversary, but it needs to take action to make a change.
