Zoe Saldana isn’t done playing Gamora yet, but the actor is already missing the character as Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 nears completion.

The actor is currently filming the third Guardians of the Galaxy movie, which writer and director James Gunn said will be his last with the franchise. What’s unclear, however, is how many of the Guardians themselves will be sticking around in the MCU afterward. While Saldana didn’t confirm whether she’ll continue playing Gamora once the trilogy is complete, she certainly teased as much when discussing the upcoming movie with /Film.

“It’s bittersweet; after all those years of complaining about that green makeup, I find myself already nostalgic about it,” Saldana said. “There’s a lot of melancholy here, but also pride that we’ve achieved something great. James Gunn has written a beautiful story, that’s making us emotional even as we shoot it. Omicron plays a doozy on us every other day, but we’re getting by and we’re happy.”

Gunn, Saldana, and the rest of the Guardians crew are currently filming the third installment in the franchise, set to arrive next year. And before that, The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special will allow fans to spend a bit more time with the misfit crew. Add in Gamora’s heartwrenching story in Avengers: Infinity War and the emergence of a past version of herself in Avengers: Endgame, and Saldana has gone on quite the ride with the character over the years.

“She began as this warrior wanting to get out of a very toxic parental relationship, then she finds the Guardians who are dysfunctional-ish as well, but they’re okay. She learns a lot and finds this bigger purpose,” Saldana said. “Then her dad comes and f***s everything up. She dies, she’s brought back, but it’s not her. I think Gamora’s a little confused, I have to say! But James has weaved this wonderful story around the character and every character in this third film.”

Along with Gunn’s departure, Dave Bautista has confirmed he won’t be returning to the role of Drax after Guardians 3. Interestingly, when speaking about moving on from the franchise, Bautista used similar language to Saldana. “It’s come full circle and I’m looking forward to wrapping it up. And it’s bittersweet,” the actor said in a recent interview.

The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special will arrive this holiday season on Disney+. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 releases May 23, 2023, in theaters.
