Long-lasting musical television shows are hard to come by these days. The last truly successful musical drama was FOX’s Glee, which ran for six seasons. Other networks have attempted shows centered around music, whether performance-based or fantasy song sequences, but none have lasted very long.

Most recently, NBC canceled their musical dramedy Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist after just two seasons and 25 episodes. The cancellation has sparked an online campaign to get the series picked up on another network, however, no plans have been announced to give the show (which ended on a plot twisting cliffhanger) another season.

The ratings for the show were consistently low despite strong fan reactions as well as praise for the handling of topics like female sexuality and mental illness. The CW announced the show’s end before airing the final season.

Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist aired on NBC in January 2020 as a fresh take of musical dramas. The show starred Jane Levy as Zoey, a young coder who undergoes an MRI that gives her the power to hear people’s inner-most thoughts through popular songs.

In addition to featuring musical mind-reading, Zoey’s tackled grief, love triangles, career changes, parenting, and finding yourself. Despite its unique storytelling ability and star-studded cast (including the likes of Lauren Graham, Skylar Astin, Peter Gallagher, and Mary Steenburgen), NBC and Peacock both passed at the opportunity to give the show a third season.
