Vikings 5 Worst Things Rollo Did (& The 5 Most Heroic)

Michael Hirst’s Vikings is more than just a historical drama series; it is lifetimes of love, hate, war, and ambition combined to form a story that can relate to everyone. The interesting evolution of the ambitious family of Ragnar Lothbrok played by, Travis Fimmel, from their village in Kattegat to conquering the world is a must-watch thriller. The story of Ragnar could, however, not be completed without his brother Rollo (Clive Standen).

Rollo lives in the shadow of his brother, but he is a warrior and leader with his own ambition that his brother’s fame blocks. Broken between jealousy and love, Rollo fights Ragnar’s wars until he breaks off to follow his own path but not without making lots of unforgivable mistakes, and of course, some really bold moves. While his whereabouts on the show is not clear after the fifth season, Rollo’s rights and wrongs so far can’t go untold.

10 WORST: BETRAYING RAGNAR TO JARL BORG

Vikings 5 Worst Things Rollo Did (& The 5 Most Heroic)

Rollo was always jealous of Ragnar, especially for getting to marry Lagertha instead of him, but Ragnar’s love for him was always unwavering. However, joining hands with Borg behind Ragnar’s back was totally unwise. Rollo immediately became the enemy of Ragnar and also lost Lagertha’s respect. It was the worst thing to do to a person that would do anything to save his life.

Siding with Borg was also the breaking point in Rollo’s relationship with Ragnar. Ragnar bribed the lawmaker to save his life but never looked at him as the loving brother he had before. If he hadn’t betrayed Ragnar, Rollo could possibly have gotten a greater role in Denmark when Ragnar finally became king.

9 HEROIC: SURRENDERING TO RAGNAR

Vikings 5 Worst Things Rollo Did (& The 5 Most Heroic)

When Rollo joined forces with Borg against Ragnar and Horik, most fans assumed that was his end considering how enraged Ragnar was. However, amid rage and jealousy, Rollo still became the elder brother and refused to fight his brother.

Fighting Ragnar would have meant the death of one of the two, and the show, if not Kattegat, just couldn’t lose any of them that early. Rolo surrendering to Ragnar showed Ragnar that their brotherhood wasn’t over, allowing them to live and fight another day; of course, for a more worthy course.

8 WORST: CLAIMING TO BE BJORN’S FATHER

Vikings 5 Worst Things Rollo Did (& The 5 Most Heroic)

Now, this was a shocker for the family because everyone viewed Bjorn as the best of Ragnar’s sons. While Rollo did it for a good reason, it doesn’t make it any less stupid. It broke Bjorn’s heart when he imagined having lived a lie his whole life. It was an attack on Bjorn’s love for both his father and mother.

Telling Bjorn that he was his father also weakened Rollo’s standing among his brothers who, despite their hatred, still looked at him as their elder brother, except Ivar, of course. It also ruined everyone’s opinion of Lagertha as Ragnar’s loving wife.

7 HEROIC: VOLUNTEERING TO BE BAPTIZED IN NORTHUMBRIA

Vikings 5 Worst Things Rollo Did (& The 5 Most Heroic)

Despite his failings, Rollo always knew when diplomacy was the best option, and this was the best of him. Of all the Vikings that entered King Aelle’s palace, Rollo was the only one who saw the need to compromise on faith to reach an agreement.

Rollo’s baptism was the first sign to the Saxons that Vikings could be reasoned with and also the reason why the whole raid succeeded at last. It, however, caused him to lose respect in Ragnar’s camp, especially with Floki.

6 WORST: SUPPORTING IVAR AGAINST LAGERTHA

Vikings 5 Worst Things Rollo Did (& The 5 Most Heroic)

Rollo delivered Frankian support for Ivar to fight Bjorn and Lagertha on the condition that Bjorn wouldn’t be harmed. While his concern for Bjorn’s security is moving, supporting Ivar was definitely not the best step to take. It was clear that Rollo had lost his love for Lagertha by then, but compared to her, Ivar was definitely worse.

Rollo’s support allowed Ivar to take over Kattegat and rule with so much tyranny that Ragnar’s legacy was destroyed. Besides, he had more reason to fight for Lagertha and Bjorn, considering the closer history they shared compared to Ivar’s wild army.

5 HEROIC: RESISTING HORIK’S PLAN TO OVERTHROW RAGNAR

Vikings 5 Worst Things Rollo Did (& The 5 Most Heroic)

While Rollo didn’t always have his brother’s best interests at heart, not betraying him to Horik was the closest he came to saving Ragnar’s life. Rollo was under a lot of pressure from both Horik and Siggy to betray Ragnar and advance his own ambitions. Besides, the promise of becoming the new earl of Kattegat was lucrative, considering his future didn’t seem very bright at the time.

Rollo’s decision to stick with Ragnar restored his brother’s trust, who would then bring Rollo along on future raids, allowing him to make his name. If he had betrayed Ragnar, Rollo would have ended up dead, either by Ragnar’s or Horik’s hand.

4 WORST: BETRAYING THE VIKING RESERVE FORCES IN FRANKIA

Vikings 5 Worst Things Rollo Did (& The 5 Most Heroic)

Rollo’s loyalty to his Viking brothers was always in question, but killing the very army he was given to guard was very cruel. After Ragnar entrusted him with the force that would maintain a presence in Frankia to prepare for their next attack, Rollo felt humiliated.

However, while the offer of lands and Gisla as a wife was the best he could get, as a good leader, Rollo should have at least negotiated a package for some of the people he was given to lead. Rollo, however, went full-on Frankian and ordered the guard to slaughter all of his people. Besides being the greatest betrayal to all Vikings and Ragnar, it also proved he had little love for his own people.

3 HEROIC: MARRYING GISLA

Vikings 5 Worst Things Rollo Did (& The 5 Most Heroic)

Gisla, Charles’ daughter, was the best chance for Rollo to start his own family and advance his ambitions. However, while Charles trusted him, Gisla was the only way for Rollo to cement his place among the Frankians. Rollo’s decision to treat her nicely and even learn the language was a smart move by him once again. Rollo changed from the ever confused warrior into a loving husband that could now protect his family and a nation.

It brought out the other side of Rollo. It was also the right thing to do after his previous tumultuous relationships in Kattegat, especially the marriage to Siggy. Marrying Gisla made it possible for him to negotiate the future relationship between Frankia and the Vikings.

2 WORST: CHOOSING FRANKIA OVER RAGNAR

Vikings 5 Worst Things Rollo Did (& The 5 Most Heroic)

Now this one hurt! Ragnar, despite his mistakes, loved Rollo and did everything anyone would do for a brother. When he entrusted him with retaining a presence in Frankia, Ragnar hoped Viking advances in Frankia would be more fruitful than England.

Rollo’s betrayal was the biggest blow to his spirit, and it is partly the reason why he lost himself and got killed. Although his allegiance to Charles and Gisla was now important to him, Rollo should have given it a second thought before obliterating Ragnar’s fleet. He could have at least given his brother the option of negotiating and maybe establishing a colony like in Frankia instead of a bloodbath.

1 HEROIC: OFFERING VIKINGS LAND IN FRANKIA

The last good thing Rollo did in the show was offering Lagertha and Bjorn his protection if they came with him to Frankia. However, the real last heroic action he took was offering Vikings the option for peace and a place to stay after defeating his brother.

Rollo had nothing more to prove to the Frankians after repelling the attack. However, offering a place to stay to the Vikings who were willing to settle proved Rollo to be the reasonable leader everyone saw in the first season. It also allowed him to repair his relationship with Ragnar’s sons later.
