It’s heartbreaking when you hear the news of an actor passing away, especially those who are loved by hundreds of fans around the world. While some films have turned into cult classics or were part of major franchise films, some may not have realized the tragedy behind some of them.

There are a number of films whose main or supporting actors passed away before the film’s completion. In some cases, they passed away before the film’s debuted on the big screen. Here are 10 actors who sadly passed away before their film’s completion or premiere.

10 John Candy: Wagons East

Actor John Candy was a veteran in the game and a famous comedian known for his work in Hollywood and his role as Dewey “Ox” Oxberger in Stripes and Buck Russel in Uncle Buck. Some may not have known that Candy was also the owner of the Toronto Argonauts.

While filming the 1994 western comedy Wagons East, Candy passed away at the age of 43. He was on vacation from the film in Mexico and cooked his friends one last lasagne meal the prior night. He was found dead in his sleep from a presumed cardiac arrest.

9 Heather O’Rourke: Poltergeist

If you’re a fan of horror films, the film Poltergeist is always on your watch list. The Steven Spielberg film centered around a family whose home is inhabited by ghosts who abduct their young daughter. Heather O’Rourke played the young daughter, Carole Anne Freeling.

While filming Poltergeist III, O’Rourke tragically passed away at just 12-years-old. O’Rourke had a history of Crohn’s disease. She started to exhibit flu-like symptoms and collapsed the following day. She first went into cardiac arrest, but her heart was restarted. She had emergency surgery for a bowel obstruction and sadly did not survive the procedure.

8 Oliver Reed: Gladiator

The English actor had a profitable acting career, starring in the films The Three Muskateers, Tommy and Cast Away. In 2000, he was filming his role as Antonius Proximo in the film Gladiator. While on a break from the film in Malta, Reed suffered a heart attack and passed away en route to the hospital.

Reed had previously suffered from alcoholism and got involved in a drinking match at a bar that resulted in the mass consumption of various liquors. After an arm-wrestling match, he collapsed. Reed has already filmed a majority of his scenes. In post-production, they digitally placed his face on a body double for the remaining scenes.

7 Chris Farley: Shrek

Chris Farley’s death shocked many in the acting and comedy community, as well as his fans. Farley made himself known on Saturday Night Live and went on to be part of the films Tommy Boy and Coneheads. On December 18, 1997, Farley’s brother found him dead at 33-years-old. He had died of a drug overdose.

At the time he had already done 85% of the voice acting for his role of Shrek in the film, Shrek. The creators felt it was wrong to use his voice in light of what happened and had Mike Meyers replace him. Farley was also meant to join the cast of Ghostbusters in the third film.

6 Bruce Lee: Enter The Dragon

Bruce Lee was a mixed martial arts legend, as well as a famous actor and director. He was working on the film Enter the Dragon in 1973. While doing dialogue replacement in Hong Kong, he collapsed and was diagnosed with cerebral edema.

The following month, Lee complained of a severe headache and his wife gave him a painkiller. He was found dead after not arriving for dinner after his nap. His autopsy revealed that he had an allergic reaction to the painkiller causing his brain to swell.

5 Philip Seymour Hoffman: Hunger Games: Mockingjay

Hoffman was known in his career for the films Twister, The Big Lebowski, Mission Impossible: III and his work on Broadway. He is also known for his role as Plutarch Heavensbee in The Hunger Games series.

On February 2, 2014, Hoffman was found dead in his New York apartment by David Bar Katz. His death was caused by a mix of drugs. His parts for the two-part finale of The Hunger Games were already filmed. His two missing scenes were rewritten to compensate for his absence.

4 Aaliyah: Queen Of The Damned / Matrix Reloaded

The death of singer, actress and model Aaliyah Haighton became a media frenzy that shocked the world. She was known as a rising star in the music industry and just started her acting career. In 2001, Aaliyah and her entourage tragically died in a helicopter crash.

At the time, she had filmed her role as Akasha in Queen of the Damned, which was released after her death. Aaliyah also filmed scenes as Zee in The Matrix Reloaded, but they had to be re-filmed due to her death.

3 Paul Walker: Fast & Furious 7

Paul Walker’s death was a heavy tragedy for many fans around the world. Walker was highly recognized for his role as Brian O’Connor in the Fast & Furious franchise. While leaving a charity event on November 30th in 2013, Walker was involved in a car crash due to driving over the speed limit.

Walker died from a combination of burns, trauma and severe injury, along with Roger Rodas. Walker was in the middle of filming Fast & Furious 7 when the tragedy occurred. His remaining scenes were created using his brothers as stand-ins and visually applying Walker’s face.

2 Heath Ledger: Dark Knight

People around the world were heartbroken to learn about the death of actor Heath Ledger. On January 22nd in 2008, Ledger was found dead in his home. The autopsy revealed a combination of various drugs that lead to an overdose and the death was ruled an accident.

Ledger had finished filming his role as The Joker in The Dark Knight, which became his most recognized role of all time and the best portrayal of the character in film thus far. He was also in the middle of the production of The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. Certain scenes were recast.

1 Brandon Lee: The Crow

The Crow has a cult following, but with a tragic backstory. Bruce Lee’s son, Brandon Lee, was cast to play Eric Draven in the adaptation of the popular comic book. With only eight days before finishing production, Brandon suffered a fatal accident on set.

While filming a crucial scene where Eric is confronted by thugs and shot, a mistake was made. The prop crew manufactured their own dummy bullets using real bullet cartridges, but they didn’t remove the percussion primer. During one scene, the bullet got stuck halfway and went unnoticed. When the gun was used again, the bullet released and struck Lee in the abdomen, resulting in his death.
