10 Anime Villains Who Love To Monologue

No anime villain would be complete without making at least one evil speech, and these villains excelled in the art of verbally demolishing their challengers and respective heroes. Arguably, their words hurt more than their fists.

Since their speeches were just as deadly (if not deadlier) than their armies or superpowers, these anime villains used their verbal skills whenever they could. Even in their defeats and deaths, they made sure to give out one last quote.

Spoilers ahead!

10 Fist Of The North Star — Shin Reminded Everyone Who’s In Charge

10 Anime Villains Who Love To Monologue

After the world ended in Fist Of The North Star, the only law that mattered was “might makes right.” Shin, the leader of a band of raiders who later built his own empire named Southern Cross, made sure that everyone he conquered knew this. Shin did this through monologues about his superiority, and Kenshiro was one of his latest victims.

To wit, Shin made his superiority over Kenshiro abundantly clear before, during, and after he defeated him in unarmed combat to win “ownership” of Yuria. Shin lived up to his boasts when he left Kenshiro for dead, but his words became empty threats later when Kenshiro and Raoh surpassed him in the series and movie respectively.

9 Dragon Ball Z — Frieza’s Words Hurt As Much As His Punches

10 Anime Villains Who Love To Monologue

Even after his defeat by Goku, Frieza was so assured of his superiority. This is why whenever he fought someone and was just one hit away from securing victory, Frieza didn’t kill his enemy immediately. Instead, the galactic tyrant toyed with their broken (but still alive) bodies so they could hear his insults before dying.

Frieza delivered his most infamous speeches to Vegeta and Goku in the original Dragon Ball Z and the movie Resurrection F respectively. On both occasions, Frieza had the Saiyans at his mercy, and he rubbed their inferiority in their faces. However, this backfired twice as his insults only motivated the heroes to beat him up to an inch of his life.

8 Hellsing Ultimate — The Major Professed His Love For War Whenever He Could

10 Anime Villains Who Love To Monologue

Millennium’s forces aren’t exactly known for words, since these Nazi vampires let their brutality and sadism do the talking. The one exception was their leader, The Major, who was the first to admit that he was the farthest thing from a fighter. Instead, The Major was a master of tactics and words, and he used both to bring the war of his dreams to life.

The Major talked about how Millennium’s death wish was righteous, with his most infamous moment being the speech he gave before the attack on Britain. Here, The Major expressed how much he loved war and all the horrors it caused. Given the scale of death and destruction Millennium wrought on London, it’s safe to say that The Major’s speech worked.

7 Mobile Suit Gundam — Gihren Zabi Was Inspired By History’s Worst Person

10 Anime Villains Who Love To Monologue

Mobile Suit Gundam is mostly known for its mecha fights and galactic wars, but one of the classic anime’s most iconic moments is a deceptively simple speech. Said speech was a eulogy-turned-declaration of war delivered by Gihren Zabi, the son of the Principality of Zeon’s dictator and the man who single-handedly sparked the One Year War.

Gihren did everything he could to achieve and secure absolute power, and his dangerously rousing speeches were one of his most effective means of securing his soldiers’ loyalties. Unsurprisingly, Gihren was based on Adolf Hitler and even reminded his own father of the evil dictator. Disturbingly, Gihren happily took this as a compliment.

6 My Hero Academia — Hero Killer: Stain Was A Walking Manifesto

10 Anime Villains Who Love To Monologue

Though he only appeared in one major arc, Hero Killer: Stain (or just Stain) was one of the superhero anime’s most consequential characters. Believing in All Might to a fanatical degree, Stain attacked and killed heroes he felt failed to live up to the Symbol of Peace’s legacy. He told his victims how exactly they failed in detail.

Whether he was thinking to himself or mere seconds away from delivering a killing blow, Stain made his disdain for modern heroes very clear. Even in his last seconds before getting knocked out, Stain was still monologuing about how much superpowered society failed, and how All Might was the only one who deserved to kill him.

5 Psycho-Pass — Shogo Makishima Verbally Deconstructed Society All The Time

10 Anime Villains Who Love To Monologue

Besides being criminally asymptomatic and therefore technically invisible to Psycho-Pass’ all-seeing Sibyl System, what made Shogo a dangerous anarchist and serial killer was that he rarely needed to get his hands dirty. Shogo’s most efficient weapon was his words, which he used to convince others to do his bidding. Namely, topple society.

Shogo was also an educated and smart man, and he used his deep understanding of philosophy and political theory to either break people’s wills or convince them to join his rebellion against Japanese society. Since the Enforcers couldn’t shoot him with their Dominators, Shogo was pretty much free to keep talking.

4 Berserk — Ubik Only Told The Harshest Of Truths

10 Anime Villains Who Love To Monologue

To be fair, all of the God Hand are known for delivering profound monologues, but Ubik is easily the ethereal group’s most talkative. Ubik’s main purpose is to convince a potential Apostle to hand over their soul to the God Hand not by tempting them with lies and empty promises but by simply telling them the cold hard truth.

The disturbing effectiveness of Ubik’s verbal skills was shown during The Eclipse. Here, Ubik pushed Griffith off the deep end by exposing his noble dreams and ideals for the petty lies they were. Worse, Ubik’s words were what ultimately convinced Griffith that his pursuit of power would be futile if he didn’t reject his humanity to become the demonic Femto.

3 Naruto — Madara Uchiha Speechified His Superiority Over Others

10 Anime Villains Who Love To Monologue

Since he was a literally living corpse, Madara wasn’t exactly known for being the most emotional or expressive ninja around. However, Madara could still get under his enemies’ skins by just talking. Whenever he had the chance, Madara espoused how much better and superior he was to every other ninja who ever lived.

The scary thing was that Madara was mostly right; he was an impossibly powerful ninja who was just a few steps away from achieving godhood. That being said, Madara’s monologues were so convincing that he fell for his own self-serving spiels, as his arrogance and ego blinded him from the fact that he was being manipulated by Black Zetsu.

2 Bleach — Sosuke Aizen Waited His Whole Life To Deliver Villainous Speeches

10 Anime Villains Who Love To Monologue

Before revealing his true colors, Aizen was the mild-mannered captain of the 5th Squad who was known for his reassuring words and speeches. When his ascension to godhood and escape from Soul Society were confirmed, though, Aizen dropped all of his courteous pretenses and indulged in the villainy he’d been repressing for eons.

As the leader of his army of Arrancars and the Shinigamis’ greatest enemy, Aizen reveled in delivering grand speeches about how much of a powerful god he is. Aizen also quickly dealt with those who tried to interrupt him, and he rubbed salt on their wounds by scolding them about how rude it was for them to even think of cutting his speeches short.

1 Death Note — Light Yagami Really Believes In His Own Godly Words

Even before he got ahold of the Death Note, Light was already prone to making overlong internal monologues about the world’s ugly state and its lack of justice. This self-indulgent habit hit its most extreme when Light got Ryuk’s ominous notebook and learned what it could do, as it enabled his delusions of godhood and importance.

When Light became Kira, the god of the new world, he egotistically monologued about his awesome plans to himself. Similarly, the speeches he gave to his acolytes or whoever was listening were Kira at his most pretentious. Notably, Light’s monologues became more erratic and unhinged near the anime’s end, when he was at defeat’s door.
