The Golden Age Of Hollywood was the era of experimentation, with actors, movie directors, and producers throwing everything into the pan to see what would make the most palatable meal. Consequently, the era had some of the best and worst movies ever made. But among the genres that benefited the most from this experimentation was the action genre.

Even though the action genre has greatly evolved thanks to advances in technology, most movies from the first half of the 20th century have aged well. Staunch fans of the genre might be interested in scouring the Golden Age to locate the best releases. Luckily, IMDb ratings make it easier to determine the superior offerings from the ara.

10 Stagecoach (1939) – 7.9

Stagecoach sees a salon girl, a drunken doctor, a gambler, and an outlaw fight for their lives as they travel through Apache territory where a major tribal war is happening. With limited time, each of them must come up with innovative ways to ensure they survive.

Unfortunately, the subject of the movie certainly hasn’t aged well and it relies on stereotypes while glorifying the tragedies of colonialism. Even Roger Ebert said that the “film’s attitudes toward Native Americans are unenlightened.” But in terms of its IMDb rating, it’s the cinematography that stands out, with the magnificent shots of Monument Valley creating a feel of paradise. And as the outlaw known as the Ringo Kid, John Wayne gives performance good enough to change his Hollywood fortunes. In fact, it’s after this movie’s release that he became an A-list actor. But he isn’t the only star. The rest of the ensemble cast all manage to impress while bringing out the key emotions of their characters.

9 Angels With Dirty Faces (1938) – 7.9

Two childhood friends, Rocky and Jerry, take different paths in life when they grow up. Rocky becomes a mobster, while Jerry becomes a priest. It isn’t long before they clash since Jerry is eager to prevent the neighborhood’s youth from being pulled into crime.

Right from the first few minutes, it becomes obvious that the movie is being carried by the chemistry between Cagney (Rocky) and Pat O’Brien (Jerry), who appeared in nine movies together. All the elements of an action-packed gangster masterpiece are present here, from car chases to long rifles to witty dialogue. The movie would go on to inspire one of the funniest scenes in Home Alone, where Kevin McCallister plays a fake flick named Angels With Filthy Souls to scare the burglars trying to break into his house.

8 The Searchers (1956) – 7.9

Civil War veteran Ethan Edwards (John Wayne) returns to his frontier home after three years, only for his family to be attacked shortly after. The attackers kill his brother and flee with his niece, forcing Ethan to saddle up and go after them. What he doesn’t know is that the search will take him seven years.

The beauty of The Searchers is that the tension is maintained throughout most of the running time, and it’s another outdated movie that’s not without its problems. Race relations are deeply explored, with Roger Ebert describing “the Wayne character [as] racist without apology.” Oddly enough, for a hero, he isn’t portrayed as totally good either since it’s constantly implied that he is in love with his brother’s wife and that his niece might actually be his daughter.

7 The Adventures Of Robinhood (1938) – 7.9

Tired of Prince John’s tyrannical reign, Saxon night Robin of Locksley works to destabilize his regime. Part of his plan involves stealing from John’s elite friends.

There have been numerous Robin Hood movies over the years, but none has ever quite managed to match up to the standards set by this Michael Curtiz technicolor classic that helped popularize the swashbuckler subgenre. The solid script doesn’t restrict itself to sword fights and archery. It sprinkles in romance and humor too, making for an all-around entertaining picture.

6 The Maltese Falcon (1941) – 8.0

Private detective Sam Spade crosses paths with the shifty femme fatale named Brigid O’Shaughnessy, who needs his expertise in finding a jewel-encrusted falcon statue. A mysterious antagonist known as The Fat Man happens to be after the statue too.

The Maltese Falcon presents its star in a way that audiences aren’t familiar with. Before this role, Humphrey Bogart (Spade) had made a career out of playing villains. Here, he is a very capable lawman. Plenty of thought is put into the labeling of the characters too. Names like O’Shaughnessy and The Fat Man are guaranteed to stick to the memory. Furthermore, all the scenes are presented in an overly stylish, but still pleasant manner.

5 All Quiet On The Western Front (1930) – 8.1

Paul Baumer, a German student, is cajoled into signing up as an army man to fight for his country in World War I. The merciless onslaught of slaughter that he experiences on the battlefield quickly kills any patriotic fervor he had, leaving him a shell-shocked soldier on the brink.

The first Best Picture Oscar winner based on a novel lays the template for most of the recent productions that are considered the best anti-war movies of all time. It has all the necessary ingredients for movies of its kind, including the transition from excitement to despair, the usual word of advice from someone who has been there longer, and a vow to never fight again.

4 The General (1926) – 8.1

Inspired by the Civil War military raid known as “The Great Locomotive Chase,” The General follows Confederate railroad engineer Johnny Gray as he pursues union soldiers who have not only taken the love of his life but his favorite train too. The Buster Keaton classic is one of the first to prove that initial critical reception can be wrong. Initially thought of as mediocre, the movie now sits close to the apex of cinematic masterpieces after reevaluation.

And there are plenty of good reasons for this. Enough time is allocated to the chase sequences, leaving the viewer more than satisfied. There is a perfect blend of action and romance too. The stunts are not only inventive but leave the viewer fearing for the life of the star. That said, the movie is also largely viewed as a “skewed version of history that favored the Confederacy, whitewashing or justifying its violent racism as perversely heroic,” as described by JSTOR. Nevertheless, the riskiness of it all is what makes The General worthwhile viewing for action movie fans.

3 The Bridge On The River Kwai (1957) – 8.1

Colonel Nicholson, a British POW, is forced to build a bridge for the Japanese. Soon, an escaped American officer returns, looking to blow up the bridge.

Besides the explosions and the bullets, the dialogue is riveting and so is the Sri Lanka setting where most of the proceedings take place, despite the film being about a bridge on the Thailand-Burma railway. Actor Jack Hawkins gives a performance of his life as Nicholson, and there is hardly a hole in the plot, mostly because the director sticks to the events that actually happened in real life.

2 The Treasure Of The Sierra Madre (1948) – 8.2

Impecunious friends Dobbs and Bob Curtin are accompanied by elderly prospector Howard as they head to Mexico in search of gold. Soon, they realize they’ve struck a vein. But they start doubting each other’s intentions and seeds of discord are planted.

Between the numerous gunfights, The Treasure Of The Sierra Madre pumps in humor and suspense in adequate volumes. Greed becomes a recurring theme and there’s the constant reminder that no one is ever to be trusted. A confirmation of the movie’s brilliance is in the accolades. Both the director and his father (who played Howard), took home Oscars on the same night, becoming the first-ever winners from the same family.

1 North By Northwest (1959) – 8.3

Martini-loving ad executive Roger Thornhill is left with no choice but to go on the run when he is mistaken for a spy. Behind the conspiracy is one of the best ever Hitchock villains, Phillip Vandamm.

North By Northwest feels a lot like a Bond movie, with Thornhill looking a lot like Agent 007 as he gets shot at from pursuing aircraft and runs across the famous presidential statues of Mount Rushmore. And just as there are Bond girls, there is an alluring Thornhill girl too, who might not be who she appears to be. The twists keep coming as first as the bullets too, making the Hitchock flick an unforgettable ride.
