10 Best Monster Movies on Shudder (According to IMDb)

Shudder has become the home for horror, with both original productions as well as building up a strong library of horror standouts, cult classics and macabre films from across the globe. Additionally, the service partnered up with Amazon Prime, becoming one of the many sub-channels, along with Starz and OutTV (to name a few), that are easily accessed across multiple platforms.

At the heart of the horror, many can argue, that the classic monster movie or ‘creature feature’ has been an essential mainstay to the genre and one of the most defining. Whether it be zombies, skinwalkers, or sea creatures, monsters have always held a special place among horror fans. Unsurprisingly, Shudder has come to house some of the most iconic and beloved monster movies.

10 Cold Skin (2017) – 6.0

Tasked to take care of a remote lighthouse, a young man finds himself working beside a hardened and spiteful caretaker. However, when the new recruit learns that the lighthouse has been under constant attack by hordes of sea creatures he must learn to work beside the old man.

Somewhat mimicking the structure and themes of Robert Egger’s The Lighthouse, Cold Skin predates the cult hit by a few years. While not quite as experimental as its counterpart, Cold Skin explores themes of sexuality, isolation and sea monsters to the discomfort of the viewer. However, for those who appreciate a strong creature design and exploration of uncomfortable themes the production is bound to please.

9 Splinter (2008) – 6.1

Polly and her boyfriend Seth find themselves in an awkward situation when a failed camping trip puts them in a motel with some escaped convicts. However, the couple realize the convicts are not the greatest threat as a parasitic monster begins to transform the motel guests into monsters.

A strong creature feature made on a modest budget, Splinter shows how a strong script and good concept can help elevate a horror production past its limitations. Additionally, the production succeeds in building up suspense and some truly horrific visions of viral horror.

8 Big Man Japan (2007) -6.3

Japans last line of defense against various Kaiju comes in the form of an eccentric resident able to transform into ‘Big Man Japan’, a 100′ giant capable of fighting off any threat.

While the Kaiju genre has always seemed rife for a comedic take on the genre, very few films have been able to spin the genre in such a way to appease both fans of the monsters and comedies. However, Big Man Japan bridged that gap in big way mixing absurd comedic timing with a general love conveyed for the gigantic monsters.

7 City of the Living Dead (1980) – 6.3

After the gates of Hell are accidently reopened in a newly inherited home, the dead rise and start to reek havoc on the inhabitants of the small New England town of Dunwich. Unfortunately for the townsfolk, these hordes of undead have a power to make nightmarish scenarios come true.

From the ‘Godfather of Gore’ Lucio Fulci, City of the Living Dead sees the iconic Italian horror director equal parts experimental and indulgent. As a result, there are plenty of scenes that boast some innovative use of practical effects to make gruesome sequences, though arguably some last longer than they should. For better or worse, City of the Living Dead still acts as one of the most ambitious works of the director, giving the undead some terrifying and otherworldly abilities to wreak havoc.

6 Nightbreed (1990) – 6.6

A young man finds himself drawn to a mythical land called Median where monsters are said to dwell. However, his quest also peaks the interest of a serial killer looking for a patsy for his crimes.

From the mind behind the Hellraiser series, Clive Barker’s Nightbreed rests more in the realm of dark fantasy than horror. This is largely because of the fascinating and somewhat tranquil world of Median, that brings together some fascinating creatures in both personality and design. While it may be horror light, it is still an ideal creature feature that shows its love of design. As a bonus, the film is one of the few acting roles of director David Cronenberg as the serial killer, Decker.

5 Mimic (1997) – 6.7

Having created a mutated cockroach to kill off a population of disease carrying breeds, a scientist learns that recent murders may be tied to her creation. After further exploration, Dr. Susan Taylor learns that her creation has evolved and is taking on a human like form to hunt the people of Manhattan.

An early work from acclaimed director Guillermo del Toro, Mimic would go to showcase some of the directors signature approaches and obsessions that would be refined in later productions. As a result, the film is a far-cry from his best, showing the growing pains of the director, but containing enough of his charm and style to carry the production. Overall, some great creature effects and strong cinematography still makes for an engaging creature feature.

4 Resident Evil (2002) – 6.7

A lab accident, at the ominous Umbrella Corporation, causes an outbreak of hungry zombies and mutated monsters. In order to bring the situation under control, an elite team is of mercenaries are sent in to take down the creatures and shut down the laboratory creating the monsters.

Regardless of how people feel about the Resident Evil series of films, their success has become an undeniable factor in bringing the game franchise into the mainstream. Consequently, the films feel more geared towards action than horror, if action is one’s preferred genre, the series is an ideal interpretation of the Capcom series.

3 The Host (2006) – 7.1

After a monster emerges from the Seoul’s Han River and abduct the young girl, the surviving family goes on a quest to save their daughter. In their search, the family also learns about the devious origins of the monster, and how their own countries negligence lead to the attack.

Director Bong Joon Ho would become a household name after his film Parasite swept the Oscars, but back in 2006 he had an international hit with his giant sea-creature flick The Host. While the film may not be the directors’ most defining work, it still carried a strong narrative structure which put the family drama at the forefront of the film. Additionally, the film offers up some strong performances, another trait of the director in getting actors to fully explore their range.

2 Day of the Dead (1985) – 7.2

A small group of scientists and military officers take shelter in a bunker, a safe haven from the hordes of undead from above. However, as tension between the groups and a power struggle takes place, the undead breach the bunker unleashing chaos.

The third film in the ‘Dead Trilogy’ from the inventor of the modern zombie, George A. Romero, Day of the Dead is the horror maestros’ most ambitious and gory entry in the series. While it may not be as iconic or steeped in social commentary as the other films, Day of the Dead is arguably the most fun of the series, chalked with memorable sequences and dialogue (and of course, death by zombies).

1 Night of the Living Dead (1968) – 7.9

One would be hard pressed to find a horror fan not well versed in the lore and story of The Night of the Living Dead. With that said, many fans will also be familiar with the tragedy behind the release, in forgetting one minor detail, copywrite. As a result, the film has been long free for distribution by anyone and everyone, with George Romero receiving next to nothing for the film.

However, the film that invented the horror genre is still a welcome addition to the Shudder collection, and perfect to throw on as double bill with other titles, as the Halloween season approaches.
